Well, I saw an commercial for the '04 Disco on tv the other day, and it involved typical lr poseur behavior. There was a guy test driving the disco by driving it back and forth over the curb, with other lr's in the background going over the dealer course. Anybody else seen this disaster?

You can download that and the "Safari" ad on the Land Rover website. These are bound to be a hit with the mallcrawler crowd.

If you ever have the opportunity to, check out one of Dean's videos that he made down in the pine barrens. a couple pics from the outings are in my profile. That is what a LR ad should be.

John,

The video is here:

http://www.landrover.com/us/en/Products/Discovery_2/Gallery/Videos.htm

Or just go to "vehicles" then "gallery" and there'll be a drop down for photos, videos and screensavers.

Thanks,

I wonder why they would use the s-models. Most car companies always show their highest trim level w/ a bunch of options. I know they are trying to show that lr's are good offroad (LOL), but it seems strange, seeing as anybody who would actually pay attention to that ad woul probably be using their disco as a soccer-mom mobile/ status symbol.

Those videos make LR look like the dumbest company. Unreal!

Great scenery in the background, though. They should have shown the guy driving around back in those mountains. Looks like LR Rancho Mirage, actually.

This is not as bad as the one where they show a family riding their disco when all of a sudden the Dad hits the brakes so hard and used some scientific name while pointing at a domesticated alley cat as the camera pans away showing the LR dealership.

So stupid and again not good for Land Rover image. Land Rover should use the footage of DiscoWeb members trail outings.

I guess you need "permanent 4 wheel drive and a powerful V8 engine" to go over a speed bump...

pretty big speed bump. They shoulda showed the on site off camber test track that was in the background. That's pretty cool. Havn't seen one of those at a jeep, vw, bmw dealer...

I paid attention and found the add amusing, I'm not a soccer-mom nor do I use my Disco as a 'status symbol' as it would not be efficient in either category.

I was actually pleased to see a Land Rover spot on Discovery channel.

This is what gives LR a bad name:

I like how the guy is navigating that rugged terrain with his thumbs through the wheel. Thought Land Rover would have caught that. Kinda funny ad - doesn't do much for the cause though.

Hey, every soccer mom I know has run the curb-park-job at least once! You know, one and a half tires up on the curb, just enough back end sticking out to make it impossible to park next to or behind without wondering if she'll hit you trying to get out - it's a good selling point if you ask me.

Granted, that ad is no Clio winner, but I don't thing it's the flaming piece of sh*t that you guys are making it out to be.

Just for a second, drop the jaded and bitter facade that you get as an experience four wheeler and forget about how LR is "going in the toilet." Now think back to the first time that you went four wheeling, and how much of blast it was to go over even the tiniest of rocks. Think back to how even a 6" water crossing was pretty cool. I think the commercial captures that "spirit" pretty well.

I remember taking my wife four wheeling for her first time and she was giddy as a school girl every time we went over any bump at all. It was actually kind of refreshing to see that enthusiasm...

Just my 2¢

Nathan,
I agree with you, but I think the commercials are more cheesy and silly than a mockery of off-road ability.

The RR commercial with the students who hitch-hike is a much better commercial. It plays off the LR name and luxury rather than off road ability, without being as stupid and cheesy.

Nathan,

Marketing is about differentiation. Why pick "me" out of a sea of choices. Just about any vehicle could to do what is in these ads. How did Land Rover differentiate itself in these adds? Or did they subliminally say they are just like everyone else?

I agree with Mark. They would have been better showing the disco on one of those dealer rock courses. Although just about any truck w/ enough ground clearance and 4wd could do the course no problem, at least most people would think that it takes signficant capability to be able to do that. Even somebody w/ no knowledge about offroading would probably realize that they could drive over that speed bump with their family station wagon.

If they had showed the same amount of enthusiasm on the rock course, I would like it better. I took my sister on that course and she was screaming at the 45degree part, but when we were finished she said "these things are amazing and I want one!"

:-( o.k. so I guess I live in a slummy neighborhood - the bulk of the moms drive either H2's or BMW X5's - but to be fair we do have a unimog down the road a bit :-)

the H2 commercial with the kid taking the straight line shot down the hill versus on the road and beating the rest of the kids is still the best imho.
