Have you ever had someone else drive your disco/rrc, and find yourself not only cringing at things that you do without thought, But also looking at your truck a bit differently???
I watched as the inspection mech wheeled my ride down a 6-8" curb, slowly at that, then off in the distance he drove, a short while later i see him flying down the block, accross an intersection, through a red light and back to me, This is one of the only times i have seen someone else drive my truck, and after all the hours behind the wheel, it all seems different to see it go away without me in it, I do like the looks of my D1. and it seems taller and narrower when i saw it drive away.
Just a thought to share.

During the trip from Mexico to Canada, there were a lot of times where I was outside the truck shooting, and Gerry would jump in and drive a section of trail.

He's an accomplished mountain, street and velo bike rider, and has done a couple of Skip Barber classes, so I kinda trusted him - even though he had zero hours off the road. He has a natural understanding for how to take a line, and how much to give it to make it through - never saw him get on it more than necessary. He also was really good about watching and listening to the spotter without adding interpretation.

That said, it was really weird seeing my own truck making its way down the trail without me. I've seen it on TV plenty, but it also struck me just how narrow it looks - especially from the rear with all that stuff up top. I guess they do say that the camera adds ten (or a few hundred) pounds!

I can barely stand sitting in the passenger seat with someone else driving.

I have been driving our 90, and had my Dad with me driving my Disco, and it is crazy to see someone else driving it. As I drive it so often, I concentrate on everything that is wrong with it and not done properly or they way I would like it, etc. But when I see it from far away, it looks a lot better. And totally taller & narrower. Funny that you mention that Peter.

I watched my roomate drive the Gold Rover off the snowbank/parking spot and wondered what may break or short out whilst he is away for an hour. This is truly and enthusiast vehicle....

The only time I've let someone drive my LR out on the trail is when another LR enthusiast and I have decided to swap vehicles for a little while to see what each others rides are like.

Other than that, I tend to be the only one who drives mine off pavement. On pavement is another matter, I loan my RR out to family and my wife drives it a lot as well.

I'm a bit more possessive about the Defender, partly because it is such a different vehicle from what most people normally drive.

If I had a Defender, I wouldn't let ANYONE touch it either.

I also noticed how taller and narrower my disco looked when my tech drove it around the side of the shop. I always catch myself taking a quick glance when I drive by a building with large glass windows too.

Matthew,

You should never admit to that, but I can tell you where all the best black or mirrored street-level windows are in San Francisco.

I let my mom drive the rover "to the bank"... I got it back and she broke the driver side seat bezzle where the controls are for the power seats! I asked her about it. Her response: It was already like that. Sure it was mom! ;) Never again!

I park my car, lock it, watch the lights blink 3 times, take a quick overall glance, walk towards the school, turn back look at it again, open the school door, and take one last look (at the minimum). I just like the way it looks from a far distance.

I don't care if that sounds obsessive...

BECAUSE IT IS!

Did anyone see Curb Your Enthusiasm a couple of weeks ago - funny car alarm scene in there.

In my case, I'm so accustomed to the fob not working, that I always look back when I press that button. Always pleasantly surprised when it actually works.

Melissa - It's never a problem when you're with other addicts. It's the norm. :-) When your garage starts to look like a LR shrine/museum then maybe it's a problem. Right Alyssa? Hehe...

When I first got my Disco I found myself looking out the front window of my home just to make sure I wasn't dreaming.

Oddly enough, I still find myself doing the same thing more than a year later.

My wife eventually became resigned to the new competitor for my affection.

I have to do the same thing, but I have to walk 2 blocks and then go up the garage stairs to check things out.

Also have a weird problem of waiting for the red security light to switch to the slow blinking before I can leave.

I dropped my truck off last month for sliders and a fuel tank skid. It's a bit out of the city, so I have to take the train home. When the shop picked me up from the train station they used my truck. It's a weird sight/feeling, kind of like love at first sight...or something...it was snowing too...

Same here.

When I've taken my 109 into 4 Wheel Parts to get its new tires and the times I've gone back to get the tires rotated, balanced, etc, I crindge when the guy drives off. I tell him how everything works and then carefully watch his every move. Poor guy.

When I worked at LR Charlotte, I drove many, many different rigs a day. I know about the attachment I have with my vehicle and I try to respect each vehicle as though it was mine. I never wrecked any vehicle so that was good.

Right now I am 250 miles away from my 109. My dad has been driving it everytime the "Weather turns foul". On a constant basis, he puts the vehicle into 4WD but doesn't lock the hubs. This scares me. Even though I know it is fine. But even still..

Everytime I talk to him I say, "How is the 109? Is it consuming oil? Are you checking the oil? Any new leaks? Anymore unusual noises? Does the engine seem to have power? Have you removed all of that water from the gas tanks yet?" Yep, he is driving my truck so he has to deal with all of the crap that comes with it. Even the owner.

From time to time, I enjoy riding in the pasenger seat. It's nice to take a total break from driving, be totally oblivious, and just watch the beautiful scenery...

count me in on all of the above...

and add a garage filled with the stock rear and front bumpers, rear driveshaft, brush guard, 6" of lower rear quarter i removed for the davis rear bumper that i could not bear to throw away, my off road rubber, a second set of unmounted street rubber and the tubing for the roof rack i am building and it is getting a little nuts in the garage. good thing allen at north texas rovers is holding my old transfer case at his place or i would be tripping over the damn thing every time i turned around.

but...i have to say the whole thing just looks strange from the passenger seat!

As much as she hates the noise, ride and austere environment of my truck on-road, my wife loves to drive off-road, stick shift and all. When she makes a difficult hill climb or challenge, she cheers! And getting the driver's seat back again can take some real talking.

My eight year old has driven his big brother's defender off-road. High centered it, too!

Maybe I watch the lights blink 3 times because the little lock symbol on the fob has worn off, and I can't tell which is which? Or the fact that it works when it wants to...

My bedroom is decorated with all my "rover stuff." Posters, pictures (my truck, and a D110), "Discovery Parking" sign, etc...

Oh yah, and 60lbs of LROI, LRW, LRE, AB, RN, BP,$G, and other Land Rover magezines.

I still have the first issue of LROI that got me started in this "obsestion" years ago.

We've all been taken over...

On my book shelf:

On my desk:

On my monitor:

This isn't including my stacks of LR magazines everywhere, posters to go up in the garage, pages of the shop manual lying around, etc. :-)

Not to mention the 8000 LR items I'm watching on ebay. :-)

I have seven LR models, two Ferraris, two Jeeps, two Minis and a Mercedes Gullwing! AND a few stickers, screensaver, wallpaper and Freelander CD!! :-)

I also look back when walking away, and when driving by mirrored windows. And when I walk home from work, I can see my car from about 100 yards on campus...look at her and the Rangie all the way home! :-)

When I have to get my RRC inspected, I always ride along with the inspector on his test drive. I don't care what he thinks. I figure if I am with the inspector, he's far less likely to drive my Rover like an idiot. Not to mention that they can rarely find the horn button. They usually like to try to twist the stalk to get the lights to come on or the horn to sound..

Has anyone else noticed how many inspectors like to grab your brake fluid reservoir and wiggle the hell out of it to see if there's fluid in it? After having that happen a few times, I now open the bonnet, hold it open, and just dare them to even think about yanking on anything.

This usually makes for a rather quick inspection... :-)

Dudes & Dudettes,

Southern California is the land of the valet. Got to have a severe level of trust to leave the engine running in my '93 manual 110, take a ticket, and let a guy I can't even talk to disappear down Sunset with my big girl.

Oh, and then there's leaving her for three or four hours at the car wash after a weekend of desert dust collection... Instructions always are: 1. blow out the whole interior with air before any wet rags go in, 2. never, never spray the radio, 3. very easy on the AC vents, please!

Arrrgh.

Sorry, didn't look at the post until now.
Ok, everyone. You want to talk nuts about Rovers?
Alan, garage? What garage? They're all in our driveway. And since we don't have a garage, our family room is our garage/parts room, complete with racks of metal shelving full of parts, floor to ceiling tool boxes, full size air compressor, etc... At least the transmission is finally out of the dining room. Our basement is the tire & wheel department, along with large sheet metal pieces. The attic gets interior bits like seats.
Axles are in the yard, along with a frame & an engine & the rovers. Our bedroom, Ron's bathroom, and the office have stacks of LR magazines. We have one floor to ceiling bookcase full of them.
...and the only Rover I'm sentimental about is Lucas. He was my very first Land Rover, my very first car of my own. I'm a bit misty about Noah, because Noah was the first LR Ron had, and he (and occasionally me) put it back together from scratch.
I haven't gotten attached to my Range Rover yet, although I do look at it with pride, since it's so nice.
Ron loves his Defender, but I'm not really that attached to it.
The rest of them are cool to own, but don't really "do it" for me on an emotional level.
It wasn't hard to part with our 88 RR or our 107, which we just did over the past weeks.

Well, after driving my husband's 99 Explorer Sport today, I'm CRYING for my Disco. I called him and begged him to skip work tomorrow just to bring it back. I will drive the RR anyday, but NEVER the Explorer again. Am I spoiled? Yes, definitely, and loving every bit of it.

Alyssa, I bet you will get attached to the Rangie. I have NO love for the Sport and we've had it since new, but I already love the RRC as my own. My Disco is the first car I bought with my own $$ too and I'm very emotional about her. I had three cars before her, but only one could match her personality. I'm committed to Rovers for life now.

PS our sunroom is collecting parts too! I have managed to get him to arrange all the tools and fluids on a bookcase in the basement, but every day there is a new pile. And I won't even MENTION magazines! :-) Sad thing is, we only have TWO LRs!!

Holy crap Alyssa!!

LOL, you sound like a Series Rover restorer I know. The fellow runs a cattle farm by day and has a Series LR Parts side business as well as restores them. He's got about 10 or 11 Series trucks and about 4 or 5 ex-MOD Defenders strewn on his farm in different stages of restoration along with 2 RRC's and an Austin Gypsy tucked away in his plane hanger. This isn't including the various Austin Mini's and MG's he's got lying around as well as the 18 motorbikes (Triumphs, Tigers, etc.). Go into his house and he's got LR parts everywhere, on the stove, on the coffee table, floor, bookshelf...sounds a lot like you and Ron. :-) He's got a 109 propped up on hay bales that he's working on. His dad rolled that one so he's rebuilding it.

You mean to say "Ron loves his Defender, but I'm not really that attached to it YET." right?? :-)

Hey Susannah, pretty cool! I saw that poster on your monitor come into the dealer a few months back. Tried to convince them to give it to me but they weren't biting. I saw on ebay a nice 1:18 scale red D110 model (doors open, hood opens, wheels turn, etc.) up for auction. Very nice model but it was going for $50 USD so would have been a steep price to pay to get it to my door after exchange, duty, brokerage and shipping is all said and done. Think I'll wait a bit to see if the price comes down on them as more of them become available.

Matt, I was impressed too. :-) Was thinking of pulling out that D110 in the display case above my monitor and see what that puppy can do.

Oh, did I mention I'm STILL in the office?!

Alan, I saw those Defender models on Ebay. I really want one. Also want the P38 model in 1:18. Haven't found a Disco model that big yet though. I've got three more Freelander models at home (seem to be the easiest to find) a Disco and two RRC matchbox that are still in the original cards/plastic. I'm obsessed to say the least.

That's actually a screensaver on my computer that I downloaded from the new LR site. It's OK, but I have the Great Divide and CT ones too. Much better!

Well, we try to keep the parts contained to the attic, basement, or parts room. Occasionally, they stray to the rest of the house, but I do actually try to keep a nice house & not live like white trash. The back yard definately pushes that boundary, though!
No, I'm not attached to the D90... and we're selling it, so I don't want to get too attached!

Fortunately, I have a large and private office and most of the Rovers are contained to MY side of the desk. It's a good conversation starter with my students...and office members have learned to expect it! (oh and it's all balanced with lovely original artwork, upholstered chairs, lamps, potted plants and framed photos)! So, I TRY to be girly!

Alan, yes, he knows. It's up on LRX and on D90.com
5% of $19,900 is a little much...

Framed photos of Land Rovers?? :-) That wouldn't be much would it??

Hmm, think I'll go visit LRX for a bit...

"No, I'm not attached to the D90... and we're selling it"

sniffle, sniffle, its my favorite. There is something about no roof, big V8 with a 5 speed, and puppy in the passenger seat on a sunny day that can't be beat.

The BMW is nicer and much more practical and tolerable for trips but the D90 has more character.

Sorry, framed photos of friends and from my wedding. NOT of Land Rovers! :-) That would be ridiculous.

Ron, Alyssa...cleaning out the driveway, eh? What will you guys bring to MAR this year? NO BMWs allowed! :-)

Yes, trying to turn some of our rover stuff into cash... law school isn't cheap... (especially when your husband STOPS WORKING to go do it...bastard...)
Our lifestyle has changed enough we don't have enough time for all the rovers any more!
I don't know what is coming to MAR. It depends on what sells. If they all sell, we aren't going to have any off-roaders left! I guess odd man out stays. Lucas (my disco), Bryson (the D-90), and Noah (the '59 SII) are our current off-road worthy vehicles (although Bryson hasn't really been out). No way I'm taking the LWB out. It's too nice (& too long!). Belive me, this has been discussed. The "well if we sell Lucas, what will we drive at MAR?" discussion was covered well.
