I won't go. Too many yahoos out there not knowing what they are doing in the family car.

Granted...it would might be a place to learn and practice if you have never been off road before. Then again, why not just do it like the rest of us had to do. Go out with someone experienced and follow. Fuck up your truck enough times to learn what not to do. Gain experience.
I've been doing this for around 14 years, and I learn something new almost every time I go out.

They pretty much have that in the UK already!

California has some great OHV parks (Hollister is a grand one), I'm sure there are others elsewhere in the US.

Actually, I think it would be a pretty good idea. I'm new to real off-roading, other than logging trails, and I'd love to have a "controlled" environment to play around in before i get out into the big, bad world. Plus, it seems they could have more variety in one area.

I thought there was something like this in PA? Am I wrong about this?

I saw the CBS piece and it looked like a motocross track because all the drivers seemed to be doing nothing but over-revving and slinging as much dirt as possible. Dirt bike racing like that I understand, it's what is done, but these folks looked like they could break a lot of parts using the "style" I saw.

Karen,

there is/was not sure as the website has been down for awhile a "park" in Altoona, PA. which is in Western PA.

there is a place in Joplin, MO that recently opened and a few LRs from Tulsa have visited. http://www.jdorv.com/

having lived in Tokyo for 5 years, I can understand the need for it in Japan as the Country has hardly any open land.

Jaime,

As I recall, the park is at the base of Mt. Fuji. I think they said the trails at the foot of the mountain were being abused, so this park was created and the trails closed. Seems like a great idea as far as conservation is concerned. Should make repair shops happy, too.

Karen P.S. Wow, nice Series truck you have!

We are building a SUV style trail at our off-road park in Indiana (www.redbirdsra.com) due to popular request. We are calling it the H2 trail :-)

BTW, we had our first act of vandalism. Someone burned the "outhouse" (50K to build it) yesterday. Details are in the message board at www.redbirdsra.com. Sucks.

I'm jealous too. Here in New England there aren't many trails and a lot are private or closed down. When I graduate in 2 years I'm thinking I might want to move to Colorodo, Utah, etc. for the same reasons. I've also got this weird idea that I need at least 50 acres of land for my house...

I have a concern about these parks being perceived by policy makers as a substitute for "real" trails.

From what I'm seeing in the UK magazines, the constant battle to maintain greenlanes and other public off-road areas seems to be complicated by the easy availability of private off-road parks.

The policy makers and "environmentalists" seem to find it too easy to point to off-road parks as a replacement for open access to public lands. Granted, the UK has significantly less publicly owned land than the US or Canada, but that doesn't seem to make a difference to those who's perception of driving off-road as mud slinging monster trucks.

Of course, I'm not opposed to off-road parks. These parks are a great, controlled environment, to gain a taste for the hobby. I think that many of those who are taking the family car out on the trails are just getting started. I'm sure many of the members of this board got started after buying their Discovery for shuttling the kids to school and the mall, and have caught the bug.

I wonder how the emergence of these parks will impact the ability of responsible off-road users to access public trails.

Karen,

Thanks for the remark on BlueBoy. Its a blast to drive although scary sometimes as the drivers in OK really don't pay attention to what they're doing.

Interesting on the location of the Japan off-highway park. We had a RHD Disco when we were there and found a road that went up part way of Mt. Fuji. It really was a real trip as you would see these small signs in Japanese characters in the middle of no where and we had NO idea what they were saying.

here's a pic:

that reminds me when we visited Los Alamos. we saw a bumper sticker that read "made in America-tested in Japan".

Jaime - who does try to be cultural sensitive.
