I am wondering if you all have noticed this and can enlighten me why people do this. I have been noticing full sized pickups, Dodge Rams mainly, (the largest sized models you can get I think) and they seem to be lifted (i'm not sure) but have tiny ass tires on them. They almost seemed smaller than stock disco tires. Is there a practical reason for this? They look ridiculous when compared to the massive size of the truck. Just curious...

If the truck is used for hauling and/or trailering it makes sence on road. Big tires are good for off road for clearance but as we all know not great for gas, and a good lift could make towing a pain. ...not to mention what a pain loading and unloading all day in a high truck would be.

...but I agree, they look dumb.

I owned a 3/4 ton Dodge 4wd work truck a while back. There was a ton of room in the wheel wells & the tires looked kinda small. But if memory serves they were 285/75's (pretty damn big) & the load rating was through the roof.

I know what yall mean. A lot of the big jobs come with smaller tires than the 1/2 ton 4x4s but sit higher, so they do look kinda dinky. Bob your Dodge would have come with 245/75/16 probably with a load range of E. The size you mention would easily fit though and probably still looked a little small as you said. I saw a 2001 Ram 1500 with the off road package with stock suspension wearing 315/70/17 BFG AT. I am pretty sure that is a 35" tire. It looked bad ass on a non lifted truck and really filled it out nice without looking too big. I did not see any sign of rubbing or trimming. The off road package trucks did sit about 2 inches higher than the standard but still, this thing looked really capable.

Mine was the 8500# GVWR package (heaver than the standard 3/4 ton) Can't rember the exact tire size but it was about an inch taller than a garden variety 3/4 ton owned by a guy I worked with.
