There are some many choices out now I have no idea which to get. I currently only have the Garmin MapSource that came with my GPS V. Searching came up with a lot of older version programs.

I am thinking to get this Delorme software when it comes out this month:

Thanks for any info.

Jamil,

That program looks sweet. I am looking for a decent program and that looks like it really has it all in one.

As Leslie said, what do you want to do? I've got Mapsource Topo, and it ain't all that great unless you are in a national forest. Even then it seems to be craptacular.

I've got a ye olde' Delorme Topo! 2.0 that seems to be better than mapsource. It is outdated but still seems to be better.

Personally, I think you should download some free software and have some fun with that before you spend money (yes, I am a poor college student so I can't go out and buy all that fancy stuff...until the summer when I get a job).

So download it, and then relax, go out there, and try to have fun with it.

I like Maptech a lot for camping/offroading/and wilderness stuff. I can hook up my Garmin Vista to it and have it track me real time - and the maps are superb.

I'd like to hear about other people's opinions on city and road maping software though. Is there some type of software for computers that will give you turn-by-turn direction? or by voice?

Wonder if Delorme will offer an upgrade version for Topo 4 users?

I've found 4.0 to be good to quite good, esp. with their new WAAS enabled antenna.

A significant drawback for me is Delorme's reluctance to publish international datasets for Topo. I can get LAT/LONG. from a much smaller device (quite a bit faster too) if I'm using paper maps for navigation. Not really an issue, but who wants to drag around a laptop for navigation when there aren't any images?

Anyone ever figure out how to load an analog map into Delorme software?

Thanks for the replies. I just want something basic that will have the old town highways and trails and the basic topo info. I would use it for finding new trails and staying on the right trail, etc. Believe me, it's a lot of work turning around 10 trucks on a narrow trail in 2 feet of snow when you end up following the only trail the GPS shows. It's also just good for safety to know exactly where you are and the surrounding area.

I've heard this story many times where a guy was hit in his eye using a hi-lift and they had to drive him out from the trail, about 1 hour time. But if they had the appropriate maps/navigation tools, they would have realized there was a road just through the woods where the injury occured.
