I'm looking at pulling a 24 foot toy hauler/camper trailer. Empty weight 3800 #s loaded it will be approx 4900#s. Do any of you have experiance pulling something like this with a D1 4.0L? Wondering about whether a leveling hitch or some kind of sway control is needed. I know is listed as having 5500# tow capability but is this asking too much? I have been pulling a cargo trailer at about 2000#s without too much lost performance. Most trips will be in the midwest and south. |

I've used my D1 4.0 from time to time to pull my car trailer and it did just fine. I don't know the weight of the trailer (homemade) but along with my camaro, they've got to wiegh close to the limit. It can get a littel squirmey when braking on a downhill, so a hitch with sway controle would be nice, or at least install some trailer brakes as a futer project. Besides that, no problems. Good Luck, Ryan |

Thanks Ryan, the ones I've been looking at have trailer brakes. We travel mostly around MI, OH, IN hauling a quarter midget to the races. So it's mostly flat lander stuff. With a little bigger trailer we'll have a few more creature comforts, shower, john, frige and all that. |

I just towed a 1976 12' 3000 lb camper with no real problem. I also had roughly 400 lbs of equipment in my truck. No trailer brakes. I was suprised with the towing capabilities of the disco, and appalled with the trailer. It was at least 3000lbs and single axle! With trailer brakes, it shouldn't be a problem. Make sure your ABS is working. Mine isn't, and the onlyreal problem I had was on some of those "stop lines" -- the wide white lines at stop signs and traffic lights to show you where to stop. Since they're painted, they're smoother than the road surface and extremely slick in the rain -- I almost pissed myself Also get towing mirrors -- like $15-30 @ walmart and well worth it. |

Thanks Dave, I do need to fix my ABS, it's next on the list, I just did a valve job. I haven't bought another trailer yet. I did bid on one on ebay but didn't win it. I'm in Michigan and it was in Florida and I didn't want to go any higher on it without seeing it. Plus when I talked to the guy on the phone he sounded like a snake oil salesman. With out current trailer I don't need mirrors, it's only 6 feet wide, but if I get a bigger one I'll definetly need them, thanks for the tip. |

My 3.9 disco tow's a 4500 lbs. boat with brakes and have never had any problems exept a lack of power up hills but that seems to be the case without the trailer as well. I would not buy anything that size without brakes. In IL anything over 3000 lbs. should have brakes by law. I do not have anything special on the truck exept bilstien shocks that keep the back end from sagging with the almost 300 lbs. of tongue weight.
