Just to let everyone know. The site is going to be down for a few days here very shortly. Jeff at Alexandria Internet has done us a big favor in keeping costs low for the past few years but is now forced to raise our rates. Bottom line is that we simply cannot afford to pay for the kind of bandwith this site uses. We have found something that looks like it will fit the bill for us and will be switching over to it. There will however be a period of black out while I rebuild the server and try to implement some more stream line technology on it. We will have a temp page up shortly so there is no need to send 5 thousand mails asking whats going on.....

Looks like EE, D90 Source, and all the other LR related BBSs are going to be picking up some extra traffic..

OH GOD WHAT WILL WE DO?

Kyle, should we do a fund-raiser for D-web to keep their current bandwidth? Just an idea.

(can't you tell I work at a college? we are ALWAYS trying to get money out of people!)

Yeah Bill , great comparison. A guy breaks his ride and wants everyone else to pay for it.... And this site is run on a decent IBM server. Dont compare that to a raggedy ass freelander...

I have made so many friends here and learned so much...plus, I know I'm not alone in my strange obsession with Rovers. Isn't that ALONE worth some $$?!

yep, I should contribute to a guy who thinks my Land Rover is a POS...

I gave when I paid for your videos! You get 10% for everything everyone sells off the site. Passing the hat is a little lame, sorry.

Bill,
You're a dumbass. You obviously don't know shit about this website. They only "request" 5% of a sale and most people don't pay that. I don't know why I'm even bothering trying to explain this to you. Some people just don't get it.

LOL

Bill, some time down the road, your Hippo will get your ass in the brown matter - and you'll want DW to be around to pick the others' brains for what's up with your ride. Wonder what was the cost of bandwidth for the DC Road Rallye thread and its spin-offs...

First of all, we aren't passing the hat. Kyle simply stated that the server will go down for a while.

Secondly, you are under no obligation to donate anything, whether or not you purcased videos.

Lastly, if everyone who sold anything through the classified section did donate the suggested 5%, we would not have to worry about hosting fees at all. I think it is your reasoning that is a little lame, Bill.

Don't take me wrong, I think the DiscoWeb site and the majority of its participants are terrific. We can all use a little info sharing from time to time. I happen to think one of the site owners is intentionally sarcastic and combative - but the info is helpful. As for costs for site support, as mentioned above, I've bought stuff from DW like many of you. I've also bought stuff from EE (Ho) and other vendors who are referenced as links on the site. It just seems to me there are plenty of "funding" mechanisms in place that passing the hat is "a little lame".

So go ahead and bash me for my opinion... hell, I only drive a Freelander - "it's not a real Land Rover"!

No , I am quite flattered that Bill thinks we do that kind of video sales...Then Bill I want you to think of all the money that passes acrost this site that we never see ? Think about the trips to the dealer that have not happened ? Start doing the math Billy and think good and hard on it....
Oh , right now I am sitting here trying to learn another new fucking OS and will be up half the night tonight and for the next weeks nights trying to make this shit work. All so you can come and post your dumb ass remarks.... You should be thnking me , not breaking my balls. $15.00 for a sale and another $15.00 as a contribution........There's just too many people benefiting from this site to let it go down.

Its not your opinion we are bashing, its your sense of entitlement. Like, "Since I bought a video, I should be able to have access to all the "info sharing" on this site." Well guess what, if people don't start putting up some money somehow, there might not be a sight. Get it?

"people don't start putting up some money somehow, there might not be a sight. Get it?"

Greg,

And you got the stones to call me a "dumb ass"... There are plenty of vendors already making money off of the popularity of DW. If Kyle and crew can't figure out how to make this site work w/o your $5 donation, then they need some better management - actually, dispite my differences with Kyle, I give him and the others more credit than that!

Bill ,its very apparent that you are cluless as far as this site gos. We could make plenty of money by taking on sponsors and adding adds to the site but we dont. That keeps the place pretty pure and honest. It might not be what you want to hear , but its not biased towards anyone or anything. Again , I am giving you a voice... You want to argue that as well ?

I have no problem throwing in what I can to help out the guys who've helped me. I have no prob sleeping at night either. I believe the two go hand in hand!

Bill,

Ever notice how you don't have annoying, irritating pop-unders when you visit DWeb? No banners or animation flashing somewhere to distract you from pure content?

I run several commercial and non-commercial sites for myself and others, and I will tell you that a purely content-driven site like DWeb is incredibly rare.

Furthermore, you should [by now] realize that this is an enthusiast website, built by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. Despite the occassional bouts and debates on the BBS, it has always been about the people who make up Land Rover community helping each other and trading ideas, support and a steady supply of barbs over our shared passion.

On several occassions, DWeb members and moderators have physically gone out to assist a fellow member who is in trouble. Add to that the support and information we all receive each and every day, and perhaps consider tempering your comments a bit? With all due respect, why not just keep your insights on how to run this enthusiast site to yourself? These guys have never been out to make a buck with this thing, and I think the site reflects that in every way.

Just my own opinion after watching your posts for awhile.

I wish I could reach thru my monitor and just bitch-slap you man. You think that Dweb can start "taxing" vendors as a means of income. This would give them money but at what cost. I've donated quite a bit more than $5 because I have saved a lot of money over the years troulbleshooting my problems thru others' posts. And yes, I believe that accepting donations should be the way they stay up and running. Its cheap fucks like you posting stupid shit that make this site so expensive to keep up in the first place.

I agree with Erik, well said.
I own-operate several sites, one that is the "d-web" for the Suzuki V-Strom (www.stromtrooper.com). I fund it entirely out of my pocket, and have no sponsors-advertisers whatsoever. I did this because of the way D-Web is. No pop ups, banners ads to slow the site down, and no biased opinions about products and services from site financial sponsors. The site is very successful and a great resouce for V-Strom owners.

I tremendously appreciate what Kyle (and others) has done for us. This site has dealt with my dumb questions and has saved me many dollars over my "rover career".

Jennifer (discochick) and I actually have fun talking about some of the stuff we read on d-web during the day.

I will be making a donation to help soon (need to get some $$ in my paypal account).

"perhaps consider tempering your comments a bit?"

Kyle, Glad I could help out! It seems my comment, "LOL - sorta like savedarby" have not only help generate you a few bucks but also called out the calvary to defend you against such harsh critism.

Those who have lambased me so quickly with such terms as "get off DWeb," "dumbass," or more eloquently, just plane ol' "ass," seem to ignore what I've said. I appreciate your passion for this online community, I never said a single negative word about this site or anyone other than the ass who never misses an opportunity to put down my "Land Rover". I only took a "pot shot" at Kyle, Lord knows he's taken plenty at me, and pointed out that you're passing the hat, while admirable, isn't the answer to the sites financial problems - if it in fact actually has any.

Amasing, all the heated arguements about cars, guns, knives and God knows what else on DWeb, and I'm asked to "temper my comments" over something like this - well, that was the first bad thing I can say about the site!

What is motivating me to kick in $10 is the value that Dweb provides. Plain and simple.

Well Billy , this is where your ignorance really shines. You come on here and start talking like Dweb just fired up and opened its doors for all the new freelander owners. In fact the site has been here for years and has gone up and down. Long before you probably knew land rover existed. This isnt the first time it has happened , its probably not going to be the last. But you dont know that do you ? In fact , you dont know much at all other then what you got when you popped in here talking about your road rally. You havnt seen us go against vendors that were our friends just because we didnt agree with what they were selling or a direction they were going , have you ? You werent here when the site went down on other occasions because the plug got pulled because of bandwidth use ? Right ? Thats the same bandwidth you are using to speak right now. You know , the voice I give you ? The voice that has a cost ? The last time people dontated and we have had smooth sailing since then. With the donations and a really big Favor from Jeff at Alexandria internet we have been running smooth for a few years now. The one time shots help. Hell they help big time. But this bill keeps on coming to us over and over and the more pople post the bigger the bill is going to be. Should Ho , Ax and I pay out of our pocket for you to run your mouth here and pick up tips ? Guess what ? We did for a long god damn time before we took a single penny from anyone. We still would be doing just that if traffic hadnt become so high and costs sky rocketed. As far as the vid sales go and other things that we sell. Its products man. YOu get paid for what you do right ? You think Ax should sit night after night burning DVDs and not get anything from it aside hearing shit from you ? Get a grip and start seeing things for what they are dumb ass. If this was the place you make it out to be I would have silenced your dumb ass long ago....

In fact , this is getting out of hand. I said this last time and I will say it again. We really really apreciate donations. BUT if you are going to send money , BUY SOMETHING instead. Go to the store and get something for your money outside of what you gain here in knowledge. Yes your donations help keep the site running and you see that as a benefit. But we like to see you walk away with something in hand as well... If you are giving up the dough you may as well get a shirt or a sticker or anything for your trouble. Hell we might even be able to come up with some "KIss my ass Bill" stickers in a hurry if you like.. :-)

Bill, I have driven a Freelander at Eastnor Castle and I can tell you I wasn't very impressed. Also I think sarcastic and combative personalities are quality traits in an individual. Take Jack Morris and Pete Weber for instance. Both have capitalized on it and I would have a beer with either one of them. On the other hand I thing asshole-isum wouldn't be a very desirable trait to let anyone know you have. If your going to do it, Bill, keep it in the closet.

Were it not for Dweb, I would have no way of finding half the products on my truck. I would have spent much more money having a shop do my wiring. Thanks to all your help, I have finally wired my accessories safely with relays (through the gromet).

You can buy that sticker here:
http://www.cafeshops.com/cp/prod.aspx?p=jamooche.9881050

If anyone actually buys one I will forward the money to Dweb. They are $3.99

Going to buy some stickers now and give a donation too.

LOL-Dweb is worth $$ for the (often unintentional)entertainment value alone. At least once a day I LMAO reading Dweb.

Rob D's "garlic bread" has got to be worth $50. Try reading it after a stressful day... :-)

Can you give us a better quantitative sense of the bandwidth usage (absolute peak b/w in / out; and total data transferred in / out)?

"Roverchic" was the one suggesting that we donate, not Kyle or the D-web. No one is passing the hat.

Wow....see what I miss by leaving my computer in the office? I hope Bill is done complaining b/c it was Melissa and me that got everyone fired up to begin with. Kyle never asked for $$, though he probably should. Honestly, if I could remember to do it, I would pay $5 a month just to access D-web. It's because of this site that I even keep my rover on the road and we felt comfortable enough to buy another one. All the people that can afford to modify and set up their trucks should be able to send some dough...I'd stay stock just to keep the site.

Jamil, it would be great if we could make stickers of some of the funniest lines on D-web. Like "Axel says the tribe has spoken"...

Also, just wondering if you guys are planning on having some other T-shirts? I can't exactly wear an XL...I would buy one otherwise! Or maybe some other stuff like a mug (since most of us are in the office when we read D-web)? Just ideas...

What are you folks talking about??? This site owes me! Do you know how much it has cost me because of D-Web?

Were it not for D-Web, I would have been happy just riding around in my stock DII. But noooo, they had to show off all of their mods, so then I have to do the same, then you get the "bigger is better" mentality, and it's all down hill from there.

D-Web, you owe me!

Depending on what you want, I could get about anything with a dweb logo on it for a good price. A buddy of mine is a rep for a company that does all kinds of these things.......swiss army knives, wathces, mugs, shirts, bags, North Face gear, hitch covers, life jackets......... seriously anything. Business is slow becuase of the economy right now so he has the time.

Guess you need to talk to the 'MEN' but I know I'd buy some other stuff!

I'd like to suggest a quarterly or bi-annual DWeb-A-Thon. Perhaps around May or the holidays, when people might be flush with a little refund money or holiday bonuses.

You could have Will and Rick's friend model lingerie, and maybe line up some special offers on DWeb videos and stickers.

I'm already excited about it.

DWeb should make and sell offroad products -- you know, bumpers, hi-lift mounts, roof racks, that sort of thing.

Or at least take the orders, the payment, and then use the money to run the site.

OK SSV.. We need to band the girls together and make those video's (no porn..just fun in the mud) .. I have two cheerleading outfits one from high school(which is green and white the colors of Disco web) and the red and white... We could charge for the videos, of course I need a bit of the profit but I would settle for a winch or maybe some mods to the rover.. Just an idea..HA!! HA!!

There's something very "Camo-Painted 1978 Chevy K5 Blazer on 45's" about women acting like sluts on video to raise money for a website.

Now, if we were to see some pictures beforehand of the candidates for this video, that might be different. Post up!

Steve, I'll be at the Nashville and Atlanta shows no doubt, maybe some others. I wish I was in the Northwest; I'd love to get out to the Gorge. How is the VA beach show? That's not too far away, and I'd love to hook up with another DWebber while I'm at it. Talk about killing two birds with one stone!

Melissa, I'd say my absolute favorite Dave song is #41, though Two Step and the Live at Luther College version of Halloween are very close seconds. That version of Halloween is just bad ass.

Like the movie idea Melissa and Susannah. If you want any explosions, rain, or mechanical effects in general, I'm in! I'm thinkin, the girls drive over a wrangler, and it blows up behind them. Plus, if you'de like to do it in Moab, I have a lot of film contacts in Utah. The mud won't be as good, but you can tan on Susannah's new roof rack!

The remaining supply of stickers and tshirts have been sold out, except for a small number of stickers and tshirts that were put aside in order to fill any mail orders that may still be in the pipeline.

All web orders received up to 3/13 have been filled, and were sent out yesterday.

Videos are still available. However, any video order received after 3/17 will not ship until 3/31, because I will be out of town on business during that time.

We are also working on some new tshirt and sticker designs, so there will be tshirts and stickers available again later, some time after the server move.

Thanks for everyone's support.

- Axel

I'm in. Too much good content and conversation. T-Shirt suggestion: "I survived an ass-chewing by Kyle". :-)

Good luck on the move, config, etc.

So I made the sticker design as a joke initially, but 2 people have already bought the sticker!

Here's the link again:

Just thought I would share that with you all. Let me know if you want me to design anything else.

Also got my Dweb stickers today and put one on the truck.

D-90 Source has actual undies. http://www.cafeshops.com/thed90source.2972959

The donation meter is an interesting idea, but rather each user's level of donation could be shown under their username on posts, rather than "New Member, Senior Member, DWeb Lounge Lizard, Genuine Redneck, Kyle Lover", etc.

Jamil,

Who put you in charge of what Discoweb says? Did you even ask for permission to state a "Dweb" position. While I can appreciate the humor of the sticker, I sincerely believe you crossed a boundary that should not have been crossed.

Jamil, you are the posterchild for those that speak first without thinking.

First you offer some half-baked advice on wiring auxiliary lights. Now you're selling a sticker that you really have no right to sell. I'm sure there's some other stuff I've missed in between, but I'm not about to go searching for 'em all.

Take that sticker down. You don't have any right to be making any money off Discoweb's name or nickname.

Curtis

Like you I saw the humor. As for crossing a boundry Yes & No, if he would have put Discoweb than no doubt, but he has Dweb so in one sense it has no affiliation to Discoweb except how we abbreviate it.
Now the people who have the Dweb site (doing a google search) they may get upset.
But I would understand how Axel,Ho&Kyle would not like it because Jamil said "he got his Discoweb stickers today" So it would not take a rocket scientist to put the 2 together.
But he originally post the stickers for sale on 3/11 and Kyle & Axel must have seen it and said nothing. So no boundry crossed in thier eyes.

Just my $.02

I thought he also said that whoever buys it, he will be forwarding the money to discoweb? So if he did do that, I think he's helping fund discoweb IMO.

Especially if the profits from the sale would be going to DW, I too dont see a problem as long as the DW logo is not used.

I was wondering when the discoweb police would show up. While as I agree with Craig and Koby's post I also have to see the logic in Mtb's post. If Kyle, Axel or Ho has a problem they would have put an end to it a week ago. My problem with you Koby is your tactics on this site. If you have a problem with the sticker than say that you don't have to bring up other posts and slander the guy. I think he was just trying to help. You can tell the guy you don't think it's right without trying to make him out to be an ass. I think you might need to think before you type.
When it's all said and done it is up to the three to tell him to quit printing.

I missed the part where he said he'd donate profits from the sticker.

However, I still think using any variation of Discoweb's nickname without permission is not kosher.

Hmmm...I may have jumped the gun. Admittedly, I did not see where he was donating the prceeds to Discoweb. I guess that is what I get for going to the last thread in the post. My apologies.

The sticker Jamil is selling to raise money for DiscoWeb is costing $2.49 each to cafepress. Only $1.50 would be coming out as profit. I couldn't tell from his posts, but if he is donating the whole $3.99 for each one he sales, then I would say Craig and Curtis really jumped the gun.

Besides, if you simply type in some variations of www.dweb.com
www.dweb.org
www.discoweb.com

This is not the only dweb or discoweb out there. Jamil was trying to do something to help the site.

I think as a fundraiser we should have a C-note Ban Club. Donate a C-note and get whoever you want banned for a week or two. Those who donate cannot be banned. Koby watch out, I got another C-note with your name on it.

Wow, I didn't expect so many replies. I didn't even buy the sticker myself. They're funny, but I don't want one for my truck, so there will be no "figuring things out." The profit so far is $2.00 since I marked them up by $1 and I plan on forwarding it here. The moderators clearly saw it since they responded to the post after I made mine. If there was a problem we all know it would have been taken care of. But I am taking it down after I post this so no one has anything more to complain about.

"Jamil, you are the posterchild for those that speak first without thinking."

Thanks again Koby for the kind words as usual.

Ron, my draw dropped when I saw your post. I was asking myself what the fuck I ever did to piss you and everyone else off. A C-Note Ban Club is a BAD BAD idea. Now, a Benjamin Ban club would be a much better name...no offense to any Benjamin's here!
