No, I think they were Toyota Highlanders that were put on a LR ship..........oh wait, I guess that would also be the new Disco! Actually, I saw a L320 (RR sport?) all camoed up on I-70 near Denver on Monday. Isnt that neat!

Matt, don't knock it until you see it unveiled. I get excited the more I hear about it and am told how the taped up spy photos appearance will look different. But like your DII you either love it or hate it. Did you know it is on a RR platform?

its certainly NOT on a RR platform, nor an explorer for that matter. RR is uni-body, LR3 is still body on frame. it does share the 113" wb with the RR.

That's better. Gil, you will have to give us the inside SCOOP when you can!

Ps do they still have the LR University facility in Lanham, MD?

Yes they do. The test track on steroids is still behind the old headquarters, too, and is still driven regulary by LRU.

So I guess that it is mere consequence that the LR3 was originally developed on the Explorer platform, still looks like an Explorer, and has identical width and wheelbase? I guess I learn something new everyday.

It is a modified Explorer. If you do not know this then you have not been following the LR3's development.

ive seen all the pictures and articles, as you have, ive also seen some internal pics and specs that havent been released. until we can crawl under one and see for sure whats going on under there, this would be a futile arguement. Internally it has been over stressed that there is nothing explorer under LR3. If the T5 is explorer based, that means range sport and the next defender will be also be glorified explorers.. something i really dont want to believe. T5 was developed with the military defenders in mind, and set up to accept independent suspension or solid axles, i cant imagine an explorer based platform having military strength. 113 is not uncommon, and if you have seen a published width, point me to it, id be interested to see that info. Ill be at the press opening in NYC for the debut. Ill take pictures underneath, if i can and we can see then. Im by no means an LR3 cheerleader, as i think the truck is a move in the wrong direction for the brand, but i cant believe that LR would be foolish enough to base its next 7 years of product development on an explorer.

Jaime..

I have not heard that, but there is supposedly a number of features kept "under wraps" so it very well could. That would be a nice surprise.

yes, it was for me as well. and the person who mentioned it seemed very confident on this issue. also the "package" is to include the CDL.

I got mail! Pretty fancy-schmancy mail from Land Rover today. It was an invitation to the unveiling of the LR3 on Wednesday, April 7 at the Chelsea Art Museum in NYC. It even says to RSVP and has a phone number to call!

Did anyone else get this invite? Says the LR3 will be unveiled at 6:30 on the 7th.

Unfortunately I cannot go. I am curious though -- more about the party than the truck I think. :-)

If you've purchased a new vehicle from a franchised landrover dealer in the past year you'll get invite's like this. I got one for the unveiling of the new rr back in '02.

"Damn, I'm liking those approach/departure angles."

Yeah, but it will probably get high-centered on a speed bump.

Looks like a pretty doctored up photo to me. Mike, according to the Disco ad on TV, those speed bumps are the primary terrain the truck is designed for. YUK!

"LR3 is still body on frame"

Gil,
Is this correct? everything I've read has stated unit-body with independent susp.

Regards,
BT.

that is correct it will be independent, body on frame. the same platform will underpin the range sport, and in theroy the next defender.

"Land-Rover's new T5 platform, which sticks with the classic separate chassis layout but will utilise the latest generation of air-suspension and anti-roll electronics. The first model off the platform will be the new Discovery, due next spring."

I thought in theory the next defender would be built on the Ford Escape platform (ack!). I know the concept vehicle is.

:-( At the rate LR are going I won't be buying any new ones any time soon. JMHO but LR3 looks like a Scion or a Honda Element on roids.

Excuse me while I go and throw up.
