Oh, man. A few months ago I got in a minor fender-bender; a woman pulled in front of me on the highway and slammed on her brakes. I made the mistake of calling my insurance company, which in turn called her, just to see if she was going to make a claim. I guess she did, because I got my bill today, and it is $1100 higher than last year. Now I'm paying $2300/year for the Disco, and I'm not sure it is worth it. I am 31 years old, and that is the only accident I've ever been in. What a crock...

shop around. Seriously, don't mention the accident when you apply for new insurance. A lot of times they don't check or it might not be on any records ...yet. If you keep paying and don't wreck again, they won't keep checking records. I have too much experience in this from when I drove like an ass as an eighteen year old!

That really does seam high? 2300 ?? WOW! Shop like Cnote said. I know they base alot off of credit (the higher the credit score the lower the rates), ask for discounts( looks like your a teacher..can you get a %% off due to that profession?) I get a discount for being an honor student--fax in the grades(state farm drops the rate about 5%%) I pay around 1600.00 a year for my rover plus I insure a younger sibbling who is 22. I have been with them since 16 though.. that could make a difference ! GOOD LUCK!!

Chris,

My wife is a teacher here in California and gets a 30% discount because of the CTA (through A Plus/California Casulty). You might try calling your teachers union for similar offerings in your state.

FWIW,
Lance

wow--I am getting screwed. Then again, I live in Boston proper, so that doesn't help things. I'll be moving (to California) in a few months, so as long as I stay out of a city, it should go down. I will shop around, and I'll check out esurance. I'll also check into teacher discounts. Cheers!

Dude your definitely getting screwed. I have Liberty mutual and pay 900 a year for a 97 disco, 95 disco and a 90 RR all full coverage. I am 28 but my rates have been low since 25. See it as a blessing you will find someone lower and save money every year.

Chris, your not going to be able to get coverage from any of the online insurers if your in MA. The carriers that are in this state have some kind of monopoly on auto insurance. Thus why Romney is fighting for some auto insurance bill that would allow for more competition in our state. I second Aaron, I have two cars (including my D90 and a 2003 Suby) insured by Libery Mutual and pay around $2500 total for the year. Full coverage, etc... The Suby is leased so I have max coverage on it. I've also had several speeding tickets and one accident with my old Disco II and Liberty never jacked the rates on me.

Definitely do some shopping for discounts.

Thanks Aaron and David -- I'll give liberty a call. I'm also giving my insurance company a call today to see if I can change some of the coverage (it's a '96 disco with 126k on it), and that could drop the rates. But I'll still look around. Cheers.

We've got Erie and it's pretty good. My yearly price dropped $1000 when I switched from USAA and I got married.

But I was paying $1600 before when I was single. Seems to be a common rate!

Yeah Chris...they are great but very expensive. They will basically insure anyone who can pay. My sister has a HORRIBLE driving record and they have never dropped her. Other companies are more tough but cheaper in their rates.

Good luck.

Have state farm, insure the '96 disco, an '85 camaro, and an '86 truck all for $450 every 6 months. My insurance actually went up when I moved to utah from socal, because I was moving into a college town. It's a little lower cause I have my CDL, but that's it.

Chris, for your consolation - with ALL possible discounts Allstate has to offer, I pay $310/mo, for five 4x4s and a teenage driver.

I live in SC and Ohio Casuality killed everyone in price. Many of the companies I talked to told me they couldn't beat them and wouldn't even qoute me. Won't hurt to try em'.

We pay just over $2k/year for the 96 Disco, the 94 D90, the 95 LWB, and the 04 BMW.
We use Allstate now that we are married, over 25 & own a home. Before that, I used Esurance. It was by far the cheapest.
We didn't go this route, but try a broker... they can use a lot more companies to find you the lowest price. Many of my customers use this route.

Thanks for all of the suggestions--according to USAA (my insurer), Massachusetts sets the rates. I'm not buying that until I check around. The other interesting thing is that it seems Massachusetts added four points to my driving record for that one "minor" (they're language) accident. Oh, and I'm glad I'm moving to California: the points stay on my record for SIX years in Massachusetts, three years almost everywhere else.

Chris goodluck...I work for USAA in the information technology company, and although I may pay slightly more..you simply can't beat the customer service they offer. I've always lived by the rule, "you get what you pay for". My .02 cents.

Adrian,

True enough about USAA--the customer service has been great and everyone on the phone is really nice and helpful. But $2300 for a single 8-year old car with one minor accident is crazy. If Massachusetts sets the rates, then I'll stay with them (why not, I suppose?), but if I can get it cheaper...I might have to go with it. We'll see.

Right, I agree, 2300 is a hell of a lot of money for 1 vehicle. We have my D1 and my wife's Volvo and pay 1/2 that. (w/out an employee discount). Again, good luck.

I'll just add this -- be happy you don't live in NJ. We here in the Garden State get screwed royally on the insurance front. I am lucky though, as a teacher I too can get a discounted rate, paying about $1600 per year for full coverage on an 04 D2. Without being a teacher, that would be closer to $2500!

I'll say to avoid the Camry, as this is what happens when a Camry hits something solid, like say, our Discovery II.
