Feeling the need to get a little exotic with your scattergun, are you?

Steve,
I saw a spas-12 for $990 @ gunsamerica.com and they have several others for sale too. Look under Franchi of course.

My brother just bought one of these new for under $380.00; with 18.5 inch factory barrel and I think it's a 5 +1 capacity.
The collapable stock would not put you near $1000.00! He's partial to them because it's what he learned to use while in service with the 75th Inf.

If you are looking for a good looking gun with less kick than a 30-30, Benelli makes a nice, light shotgun that you can also get with a short - non-hunting barrel, probably for under $500.00.

The SPAS 12 does look bad, but for my money, the Benelli M-3 is much better for an auto/pump gun. They cost about the same new as a used SPAS 12 and they're still being imported, so there are plenty of parts & accessories available. The Benelli shoots 3" shells (SPAS-12 shoots only 2 3/4"), the SPAS has about 3 cumbersome safeties, which are two too many (Benelli just has the one button on the trigger guard). That folding stock on the SPAS is pretty cumbersome to unfold, too, and that "J" hook on end of the stock (for "one-handed" operation) is virtually useless unless you have forearms like Popeye, The one thing the SPAS 12 had (before the BATF outlawed them) was a "street sweeper" vacuum-cleaner-attachment-like choke that was designed to spread shot laterally.

Talk about a "street sweeper," the USAS was a bad looking weapon. Now your supposed to declare it to the ATF and pay a transfer tax, like a machine gun, because it's considered a "destructive device." The bastards banned them on looks alone, just like the FAL and everything else.

RB, I gotta' call you on this. I will admit I don't know a ton about spas shotguns, but if there going on guns amercia for $900 - $1800 used you must be mistaken. It wasn't HOT was it? I mean a cheap ass auto loader a wal- mart is gonna' be close to $300. Maybe he forgot to put the 1 in front of the 380!?

I think rb was referring to a Remington 870 defense pump gun, which would be around $300 at Wal Mart. Not a bad pump gun at all and they've used a lot of them in the military. I like the fact that it has a steel receiver unlike most other pump guns.

Your right Sandy D a closer look at the thread its a 870. Great gun for the money, I agree. I have a Winchester 1897 that was made in 1911 and its sweet. Real popular with the cowboy shooters but they are the original assult shotgun started using em' in WWI and WWII and led to the mod 12. A shootable piece of history. Plus, if you hold the trgger down it will shoot as fast as you can pump it. Which is kinda' fun.

No, infact it was bought at a well known sporting goods store here - G.I. Joes. In fact, my dad just bought my OTHER brother a Benelli for about the same price - new - at another store in town called Keith's Sporting Goods, probably the best place to buy firearms in N. Oregon - I think they carry several contracts with various police departments in the area, so they are ligit.

And yes, I was referring to the 870 with mods for a lot cheaper than the SPAS-12 as a comparison of two guns that both have their pros and cons, not the least of which they will both do the same job for a much different price - by the way, just moving the action back and forth is enough to scare away most intruders, and you can't miss if it doesn't.

O.K. now I'm with you RB. I agree with you there are a lot of shotguns out there that are cheaper and just as good if not better. I know that your not going to find one heavier than the Spas but I thought you were saying you could get one new for $380.

The M1 and M3 are both the inertia recoil system, which is very fast cycling and extremely reliable. Either one is hard to beat. In addition to the usual buckshot and slugs in either semi-auto or pump mode, the M3 was designed to fire low powered tear gas shells, rubber bullets, grenades etc. in the pump mode which wouldn't cycle in semi-auto. Also, if a shell did happen to jam in semi-auto mode, you can clear it easier with the M3 using the pump action. Since the M1 is a field gun, too, you have a lot more choices of barrels, chokes, etc. I believe the M3 comes with just a cylinder bore barrel these days, although they used to offer a field barrel with chokes for $$$.

Don't know much about the M4 except that it is gas-operated, has a collapsable stock and was designed for the military & police.

The other Benelli I like is the SBE semi-auto field gun which shoots 3 1/2" shells.
