I am now in the market for another truck. Not a replacement for my Disco, just an addition to the family.

Basically I have narrowed it down to a 101 FC or a Pinzgauer 712. Since these trucks are somewhat rare and exotic for the US, it has been hard for me to find much information on them. So I am turning here for some suggestions and personal opinions of the vehicles in question.

I understand that refurbishment might be needed (seeing as how the ones here are old), so what are some areas of concern I should check for rust or common problems?

This is just one question that I have. Please, anyone with experience around these trucks, links to info about them, or just observations on their aesthetics and tendencies, help me out and reply to this.

Check out the FC he has, I sure do like it. I've driven past it so many times and every time get the same feeling that rig is special.

Adam,
CHeck out this link. One of our club members. You could probably email him off line through our site. I know he still has 3 101's. I also think he is a member of some 101 uk club.

Adam, a 712 is an awesome truck and unbelievable ride off road - however:
- the cost of rebuilding or upgrading one can go into several $10k;
- be prepared for broken thumbs, unless you know by heart NOT to keep your thumbs inside the steering wheel. The 712 has very steep steering links' angles, and no power assist - so the bumpsteer is severe. I was surprised by this much bump steer, for it wasn't much of a problem to turn 37" Baja Claws on dry pavement while stopped.
- a 6% highway grade takes your speed down to 30 mph, so... It's a ride for the patient.

Look out for the 710 - much more agreeable, and still a lot of room inside for camping.

Thanks for the links guys. And Peter, yeah I have been warned about the cost. I have a friend with a 710 who totally restored it, and he nearly got a divorce over it.

I'm cool on the thumbs, I've always been adamant with myself about not doing that.

Didn't know about the bumpsteer being that bad with the 712. I'll have to check on that.

And the 710 is not out of my mind; I am considering it as well, since there seem to be more of those around than the 712's.

I've found myself keeping my thumbs wide out in my Disco a day after a 3-hours' wheeling in a 712.

But, this thing is really unstoppable. Mind-boggling. For SoCal guys - the owner of that 712 used to take 10 tourists for an off-road ride to Holcomb Creek, Jonh Bull, Deep Creek, etc. Wide as it is, there wasn't much choosing the line - just keep it between the trees and hold on to the steering wheel.
