Please try this,
Open the driver side door of your D1 and stick the ole key in the ignition, and start her up, Leaving the driver door open, turn on the rear door wiper! Does it work??? Mine will not in this fasion, but with the driver door closed, it works fine! What kind of safety is this i ask? Please let me know if this is a rover thing, or a lucas thing!

Its trying stop you reversing while your door is open, you know, and crashing the door onto a lamp post. Don't ask me how I know.

Mine does the same thing. I asked the dealer about it before the warrentee wore out they said it's supposed to do that, no reason why it just does.

Come on Dean fill us in on the open door and the lamppost

Lets just say that after the incident, a ford cortina's door could swing about 150 degrees. It was never any smoother than that either!:-)

A gas pump incident ala Chris Farley???

Did the Cortina finally corner with all four wheels on the ground?

Either the motor or the fuse..........or could be the sensor for the door being closed. I would try cleaning the door sensor first. Obviously you have checked the fuse. The motor can be accessed by taking the rear door panel off. I say check the sensor first becuase it is the easiest.

Speaking of strange things that happen when the driver's door isn't closed, I think I have a story that takes the cake. I know that LRs are known for electrical gremlins, but knock on wood I have had none with my 01 D2. However, I can't say the same for our 99 MB E320 wagon. Not only does an erroneous "lamp defective" light constantly activate on the dash, but also had to have the ignition replaced twice b/c the dealer and the regional rep couldn't figure out why the car would mysteriously refuse to start. (Mercedes keys don't have a metal part - they are completely electronic - at least ours is that way). But getting back to the drivers door, One day I was driving it to do some errands. Well, after I got back in the car, it started fine, but as I was driving down the road, I realized that the turn signals, windshield wipers, and windows would not work. Therefore, I could not even roll down the window to use a hand signal to indicate a turn and was getting honked at constantly. Well, I pulled over and discovered that the drivers door was slightly ajar. When I got back in the car, I slammed the door shut and everything worked properly. The service guy did not even attempt to explain this one! Oh, and also, the transmission slips in cold weather with only 80k miles on the vehicle. So far, it has been alot LESS reliable than the disco (which BTW only has 30K).

I apologize for the length of this post, but felt I had to share my "open door" story.

Jack,

Perhaps you've been driving with the door open for two weeks! Suppose you'd notice the interior lights on.

I've noticed that sometimes when the rear cargo door is open, that little light near the passenger-side jump seats will sometimes come on / sometimes come on after a couple of minutes / sometimes not come on at all / sometimes come on as soon as I shut the door. Might be time for a new momentary switch back there.

Something I noticed the other day on my RRC. When you close/open the sunroof and the passenger door opens up the sunroof will stop closing/opening. So there must be some sort of relay thingy.

This was of course when I wasn't moving .. ;)

so let me get this straight.. you can turn your your rear wiper? I know it sounds silly but on my d1 i have to hold down the button to make it wipe more than once and when i let go, it stops at the down position... i just thought that was the way it was supposed to be.. am i wrong in thinking this?!?!?!
take care
