Just a word of caution: I just had an oil line explode and catch fire on my '93 V8 Defender. After dumping two dry chem fire extinguishers into the blaze, I'm left we a bit of a mess to say the least. Fried wiring harness, melted plastics, vacuum hoses and god knows what else.

Luckily I snuffed it before the fire passed thru the firewall or before any body panels lost their paint (well, except for about 1 sq. foot of firewall). Apparently these weak and dangerously positioned oil lines are present in many Defenders, Discos and RRs. I am replacing mine with steel braided.

Just an FYI. Don't wait to inspect/replace -- I had this as a to-do on my project list. And always carry TWO fire extinguishers! Oh, and remember -- if it happens to you, pull the hood release before you exit the vehicle -- you may not have a chance to get to it again....

(There have been several NAS 110s that have burned now. They are among the oldest in the North American fleet, predating the NAS 90s and Discos. I don't know much about RR oil lines -- maybe someone can post some knowledge...)

Good reaction, Doug.
I've had one underhood fire - and the first thing that happened to me was I broke the hood release cable!

is there a pre-made replacement braided line or does one need to assemble it oneself?

Sorry to hear about your fire... glad nobody was hurt and the damage was contained.

I think I can get it done by then -- thanks for asking Jack. Talked to Rover Accessories today, and Charles said that he is going to compete again this year. Should be a good one.

BTW, I was talking about the braided lines with Charles, and I believe he said he makes them for RRs and Discos, too.

See you in Nevada in the fall!

I checked the oil lines on my 95 D1- They're leaking quite a bit! The actual quantity of oil isn't too bad, but it's all over the place. Potential fire problem, so it's time to order some new expensive hoses.

BTW, I've had a couple of firefighters tell me that the way to do this correctly is to NOT open the bonnet, which aids the fire with airflow. Correct procedure is to spray the fire from underneath. Makes sense. Hope I never have to do the drill again....
