Since almost everyone changes their own oil, what do you do with the used oil? Where do you dispose of it? I asked an auto parts place and they said they would charge a disposal/environmental fee to take it. Any truth to this? Any suggestions?

Try another auto parts store. Autozone willingly takes it at no charge.

Around here the garbage company will take it on pickup day. They even suppy a two or three gallon container if called in advance.

If you have recycling pickup, it might be worth a call.

Chia, I recycle mine at the local O'Reilly Auto Parts store. They will take up to 5 gallons at a time for no charge. I also keep the used oil in an old 5 gallon water cooler jug. It is clear so you can see when it is almost time to take it in and the spout of my oil drain pan fits perfectly in the top of the water jug.

 backyard

 brilliance, shear brilliance

your dog has a hole under it's tail, just pour it in there

if it's just a quart or so, you can solidify it or stabilize it and it can go in with the rest of the trash. The problem is when you have gallons of mobile, liquid oil seeping out of the trash bin, out of the garbage truck, onto the road, onto the ground at the transfer station, etc.

I think it's a Fed reg that if someone sells oil they must accept it for recylcing.

Maybe Philip has a waste-oil furnace in his backyard, or maybe he has a 50-gallon tank he puts his used oil into prior to recycling.

I'm not sure he gave us enough information when he said 'backyard'.

Maybe some pics of his backyard would help.

BTW I've been looking for a small waste-oil burner for some time now. They make big ones for houses that cost around 3-5K, which is not worth the investment for me. What I'd love to find is a small unit that can add to the hot water system in my house, and could burn all my (and my neighbors) engine and other oils. Anyone know of a system, pleeaaaaase let me know!

install a waste oil burner in your cargo area and have it power the bailing pump and coffee maker
