Or maybe they were aiming for my XD.

I was taking a leisurely drive down one of my favorite roads in Owen County this evening. 25N is a single lane, approximately 3 mile dirt-gravel road that from the North winds through a forest with three small creek crossings. It opens into a spacious valley of rolling meadows and continues up a large and rocky drive. There is a large creek that runs through the low part of the valley with the road crossing over a large iron pipe about 6’ in diameter.

We had about 2 inches of rain and I wanted to make the drive so that I could look at the rushing water, and of course get the disco wet.

After driving about ¼ mile on the flooded road, I crossed the swollen creek (over the pipe) and parked on the high and dry end of the road just a few feet from the banks. I got out and spent a few minutes enjoying the sound of the rushing water and looking around at the fog as it crept from the green grass into the woods.

Out of nowhere came one of the eeriest sounds one could experience. If you have ever heard a bullet whiz by you the sound is absolutely unmistaken able and unforgettable. If not, grab a DVD of Saving Private Ryan on a good home theater system and you will know what I mean.

Basically, it was like this: Fphripp thump poppahhhhhh

The bullet sounded like it came between me and the XD which had about 10 feet between us, striking the ground behind me, then I could hear the report in the woods to the North East. The shooter was either trying to shoot me, the XD or giving me a warning shot to get the hell out of “their area”. I wandered around in a stupor trying to figure out what just happened. I looked towards the woods, didn’t see anything and then for some dumb reason I walked back out into the open. I realized that scanning around trying to see who was shooting at me probably wasn’t the smartest thing to be doing so I got in the XD and drove on. About ½ mile later reality started to kick in and my cell phone rang. It was Jennifer (discochick) and I just let her know what happened. Yeah, that was strange.

Anyway, I told her I was going to call the police and let them know what happened. I did and the dispatcher informed me that no one was in the area to respond quickly. It was getting dark so I told him that I was moving on and just wanted to report it.

So, that is how my evening went. I am glad that of course I wasn’t hit and also that the XD was spared.

Just thought I would share that story with my D-Web friends.

Felix - skin can, but hole in the skull wont..

Brendan - you are one lucky man. As they say in Russia in such occasions - go and put candle to whatever saint saved ya. I am wandering if it was some drunk, b/c though of some nutcase wandering about in forest with gun is not exactly very relaxing. And you got pretty good nerves, i'll tell you that. Not many people would be able to drive vehicle after such thing.

I would've shot back!

Good thing I always keep a Savage .22LR in the trunk, just for these occasions...

In all seriousness, all's well that ends well, and I'd just try to forget about it. Either way, it'll make a good story at a BBQ this summer...

Congratulations Brendan:

You now have a story folks will always stop to hear the end of.

I got the fphripp-zing a few times from snipers in Bosnia. The worst thing is we KNEW they were drunk most of the time and even if they just meant to mess with us, that was no guarantee. :-)

Don't know about where you live, but around here when that happens there is bound to be a large field of funny looking five-finger-leaved plants somewhere in the area.

Never had it happen to myself, but a friend yes, and you hear about it on the news every once in a blue moon. In fact, last time I remember it happening, it was on someones own property - like out one their back 40 where they never go - grown' the weed on their own land!!

The problem is so bad here that in the summer months the DEA flys a helichopter every day, just looking... yes, it's black... :-) no actually it's a Washington State National Guard JetRanger with FLIR and a very large man with a the pony tail, and the camo pants, and the "DEA" on the back of his shirt, and the "sample" weed growing in a 6" pot sitting on the floor in the back of the chopper.

Anyway, glad your OK, and I wouldn't have taken your truck even if they had got you.

Felix,

You've inspired me to pull out the OK Computer this morning and give it a spin or three while the missus is out shopping.

Brendan,

That's really scary - I'd almost hope the guy was stone sober and just sending you a message of some deranged sort. Almost more frightening to think he was hammered and you just got lucky.

Go light that candle and buy a lottery ticket!

I was robbed at gun point a while back and know that dazed feeling before reality kicks in. I didn't want to give up wy wallet, I argued with the guy for a few minutes before it dawned on me that this guy could kill me for eight bucks.

Mr. Bailey we had a similar problem when I lived in PA. Law enforcement would use helicopters to check corn feilds. The down draft would part the corn stalks to exposed the hidden crop between the corn rows.

Brendan glad to hear you and your rig were alright

You should have fired back.

I did not quite get it, were you trespassing or not? If so you deserved to be shot at. I have heard stories of people caught trespassing and had their trucks shot to pieces. if all you got was a warning then you are lucky.

Brendan, Glad you're OK. Calling the cops is a good idea, even if they don't respond. Sometimes these things go unreported until someone is hit. Maybe the local cops will keep an extra eye on that area. I'm betting R. B. is on the money, too.

Oh, Ron, trespassing isn't justification for using deadly force. Definitely not in PA, so keep that 10mm holstered!

The common law in PA up until fairly recently was that you could shoot someone trespassing so long as you first fired a warning shot. PA law is quite interesting.

Irregardless, if I was trespassing anywhere south of mason-dixon I would expect to be shot at.

Thanks guys but Ron. WTF? I deserved to be shot at? What the hell is wrong with you? With all due respect, arent you the one going to law school that posted a note "I want a gun"? If not- sorry if so, you should not be allowed to pass the bar.

I wasn't trespassing, and I was on a public, county road. I don't carry a gun in my vehicle due to a no-weapons policy where I am employed. My guns are securily locked and stashed in my safe at home until I want to go play. And since you have never been shot at, you wouldn't understand that grabbing my gun and instantly shooting back probably wouldnt be what you would be thinking. Just like Tom C summed up, you are dazed in a situation like that unless you are trained or a natural badass. :-)

Coming from a family that owns land that people tresspass on (also full of lawyers btw) I would never consider shooting at anyone just for tresspasing. Now if we did see the person who set fire to my fathers beloved cabin last year then I may have considered firing at him in the act.

Damn, now I am pissed at Ron's dumbass response. I am going to go ride my motorcycle now. I guess I better make sure I don't stray a bit off the road so that one of "Society of Ron" cult members doesn't shoot me.

Other info: It's too early in Indiana for pot, but we are thinking that possibly a meth lab is in "them woods". I will be taking a break from that road. As Jennifer keeps reminding me "The XD is very noticable, and the only one that we know of South of Indy." I suggested that we switch for a while and she rightfully replied "So you want me to get shot"? :-)

Ron, I have to disagree. PA law is quite clear about the use of deadly force. Check PACC 505 - 507. 507(c)(4)(i) and (ii) explains that one can only use deadly force to protect property only to protect his DWELLING and to prevent a felony from being committed therein, and only under certain conditions. I hate to beat this to death but I think it needs to be stressed. If you shoot trespassers you'll go to prison.

I took my antlers off. :-)

Nope, no hunting season at the moment with the exception of crows I think. Now our crows are getting much larger since they eat the genetically engineered corn but....

Whatever the reason, "they" were shooting at (near) me. I haven't checked my lottery numbers yet. Probably should do so. If I win the whole thing, I will buy that section of woods the "shooter" was in. :-)

My SD rack may have resembled some antlers though. With the hellas it could have resembled a four eyed 14 pointer.

Disco gold: kick butt response btw.

To all who fail to read, or fail to comprehend:

"I wasn't trespassing, and I was on a public, county road"

Then you should not have been shot at. If you trespass you have to expect to be shot at. It is just the way of things in some parts of this country.

"Ron, I have to disagree. PA law is quite clear about the use of deadly force. Check PACC 505 - 507. 507(c)(4)(i) and (ii) explains that one can only use deadly force to protect property only to protect his DWELLING and to prevent a felony from being committed therein, and only under certain conditions. John did you READ my post.

"The common law in PA UP UNTIL FAIRLY RECENTLY was that you could shoot someone trespassing so long as you first fired a warning shot."

UP UNTIL FAIRLY RECENTLY means it is no longer the law, but was the law UP UNTIL FAIRLY RECENTLY.

You have to remember that there are many people off in the hinterland they take trespassing very seriously and WILL SHOOT AT you if you trespass.

Law, no law, most don't know and most of the rest don't care. So if you were taking your Disco on someone's land illegally then YOU DESERVE TO BE SHOT AT, whether the law permits it or not. While I would not shoot at you for trespassing (I would foribly detain you and press charges for sure) many people will.

Now since you were legally on a road then you did not deserve to be shot at.

Ron

Who cares where Ron's from! The fact remains that he went to the most Southern school in the nation. Where else can you walk past the tomb of Robert E. Lee on the way to class everyday? Where else can you find the Alpha chapter of Kappa Alpha, a fraternity founded on emulating the ideals of Robert E. Lee? W&L is definitely Southern and it will make any carpetbagger into a rebel.

Ron, I know I'm going to sound stubborn and thick-headed but I did read your post. The statute to which I referred was passed in 1980.

You are absolutely right though, the reality os that there are many people in PA, and lots of other places, too, who do not care about that law.

I'm not trying to start a pissing match, I just wanted to clarify.

Charleton Heston.....I mean Ron, If you feel so strongly that someone should be shot at for trespassing, why do you choose to detain rathen than shoot? And what if a person is trespassing who doesnt know they're trespassing? Someone from the city gets lost out in "Pump Ken" confederate flag city, and needs help, it's OK in your mind to shoot first, and ask questions later. I hope my black ass never gets lost.....and I live in NOVA, and have to travel to "REAL VA" quite often for business
A man is telling you about a close call he just had, and you response is "if you were trespassing you should've been shot.......I hope you're never the victim of a violent crime, even if you are trespassing!!!!!!

you miss some action, fellas.
I was shot at in Motor City, and it took me a while to realize that. A fellow grad student was shot to death while walking away from his car (on the street where I used to leave my car every day).
.. and yeah Ron, that was pretty dumb... even if you _can_ shoot someone, you should reconsider your reasons _why_. In fact, you'd make a good cop in San Diego - they shoot the flies down, it seems.

If any of you know about Bloomington, IN-BW's message is tack on. This is ELF and Heartwood territory. They burn houses down along Lake Monroe, destroy earth moving equipment and spike trees here. The area I was in was a classified forest but the "Eco Terrorists" don't hang out in that part of Owen co (borders Monroe(Bloomington))

Now there are plenty of militia in the area, and of course meth cookers and pot growers but it is too early for pot.

For those of you who do not know of W&L here is the summary from Princeton Review:

Student Body
“W&L is often described as having a student body like a country club: white, well-off, Republican,” explains one student. “Many students here come from families of wealth. My little Neon is parked next to a Lexus, a Saab, and a brand-new SUV—in the freshman lot!” Students concur that the “conservative, clean-cut, red-blooded American boys and girls” who attend W&L are “fun-loving, ambitious, and elitist.” Writes one African American undergrad, “You can tell some of them have never even been around minority students before.” Those who fit in agree that “never before have I met friendlier people. A lot of our students [approximately 10 percent] are from Texas, so friendliness is an inherent trait.” Those who don’t fit in either transfer out or endure a long four years.

Academics
While not the best-known small, traditional, liberal arts school on the East Coast, Washington and Lee may well be the best loved by its students. The school is not for everyone—see Student Body, below—but for those who fit the mold, W&L is a “little utopian society” that offers “really small classes” and a “strong sense of community among the students, faculty, and administration.” These factors help mitigate the heavy workload here. Writes one student, “Academically, W&L is very challenging, but the small classes and group discussions make it very easy to participate and learn.” Students say the faculty is “extremely helpful and always accessible” and appreciate professors who “epitomize southern hospitality. They’re amazing!” All classes are taught by full professors; W&L has “no TAs, which is excellent.” Undergrads are equally sanguine about the administration, reporting that the “administration and departments bend over backwards to help you out. If you are serious about learning and not just willing but want to work for your education, W&L will present excellent opportunities.” The school runs on an unusual academic schedule, featuring two full-length terms (fall and winter) and a mandatory six-week term in the spring, during which students participate in seminars and internships or travel abroad. W&L also has a very popular Honor System that allows students to schedule their own nonproctored exams and leave their dorm rooms unlocked. Take-home, closed-book examinations are not uncommon, and “the buildings are open 24/7” as well. Brags one student, “The Honor System dominates life on campus and is a large part of what makes this university so special.”

Campus Life
Students at W&L really, really want you to know how much they drink. More than a few, in fact, are deeply offended that they dropped in this publication’s “Drinking School” ranking last year. We’ll let the students set the record straight. Writes one, “W&L allows students to pursue a wide range of academics while maintaining a strong sense of drunkenness.” Adds another, “W&L is Utopia, with frat parties and kegs added.” Indeed, the W&L social universe revolves around the Greek scene. Comments one student, “We have the greatest fraternity scene in the country. Period. If you like bourbon and Coke or beer flowing like water, there is no place to go but here.” Agrees another, “We like to get our drink on.” Because “fraternity parties are open to everyone, except for special functions,” W&L suffers less from Greek/independent antagonism than do many other Greek-dominated campuses. During nondrinking hours, “club and intramural sports are popular. The opportunities for satisfying extracurricular activities are excellent.” Students also love to “go tubing in the river, play Frisbee in the quad, dance all night long,” hang out in their “palatial dorms,” or walk across their postcard-perfect, ivy-covered campus. But when it comes right down to it, “basically, students study their asses off during the week, then party their asses off on the weekend. ‘Work hard, drink hard’ is our motto.”

PS they ommitted the part about the secret society that rules the south

If you want bonafide Southern elitism and secret societies, you'll want to go to the University of Virginia.

Its been a while since I lived there but I can't don't believe the law would have changed. Ron I'm almost positive its illegal to discharge a firearm in Mongomery County.

Why is it after reading Rons' last post I cannot get the names "Muffy" and "Farnsworth" out of my head?

Or "Buffy" for that matter..And I thought the prep school I went to was uppity. So I am assuming the Kappa Alpha Order was founded @ W & L ?? Interesting, all the KA's at my alma mater drove Range Rover's (w/confederate flags affixed proudly to the front bumper)...There is obviously a correlation.

Haha Brendan and Melissa
I guess I'm sort of the exception to the rule here at W&L. I don't drink (though I am in a frat) and I actually use my Rover for what it was made for. There are TONS of capable SUVs on campus but when I ask them to come off-roading with me they never want to in fear of hurting their vehicle. Definitely plenty of good trails around here though, thanks to Ron and Susannah for helping me find them!

David it sounds like you are the "minority" there. Kudo's to you!

Discoweb theater:
The scene: W&L Parking Lot. David spies a nice Disco and notices the owner is getting in it. He quickly pulls up in his Disco to meet the other guy.

David: Hey man, nice looking Disco you have there.

Man: Thanks, my parents just gave it to me last summer during out stay at the Hamptons. By the way, my name is Farnsworth.

David: Cool, nice to meet you.

Farnsworth (Was Man) I notice that you are driving a Landi also. It sure is neat looking. Where did you find that dirt? Is it something you can apply yourself? It really makes it look adventurous.

David: Yes, this is my Disco. My friends and I like to go off-roading. Would you like to go with us sometime?

Farnsworth: I would absolutely love too. I spent some time in September doing some very aggressive off-roading at the Greenbrier. It was such a hoot. My parents were a tidy bit upset when my sweater got a scuff of dirt on the collar but it was a very nice time. Will there be any water puddles to go through when we go out? I want to be a mad man!

David: Uhhhh, there may a be a few. Hey Farnsworth I tell you what, I will send you an e-mail to let you know when we are going.

See you got it all wrong. They must be getting soft and/or poor down there. when I went there no one cared as the cost of fixing it was a non-issue. Still remember seeing Peter's poor range rover after it came back. Mad man! That does not do it justice, think LBJ and a case of lone star and an F100!
