So, I'm getting new BFG A/Ts tomorrow and I'm going up to the 245/75-16 size...but I'm leaving my spare tire. It's a brand new XPC in 235/70-16 size. Aside from looks/matching, would that be dangerous if I was to need to use the spare say, on the trail? The difference is only an inch or so between the two, but I don't want to ruin my truck in case of an accident or emergency!

Thanks in advance

Sus,

I'd just get all 5 and be done with it. No need to worry about messing anything up if you end up having to use the spare and you're a long way from home. I rotate my spare into the set to make sure all my tires have roughly the same wear so I can swap tires and it's all the same essentially.

Just my $.02

hey Sus, do a couple of searches on here to find specifics. but basically, everyone recommends a matching spare. due to the full-time 4wd, i believe a different sized tire can wreak havoc on your transfer case. someone correct me if i am wrong.

In an emergency situation, ok for very short distances. Perhaps an inch in diameter, but consider circumference.

Really, any difference in circumference can have a potentially damaging effect on you transfer case.

Sus,
I'm pretty sure that somewhere around Faulconerville there's a place on 29N that sells used tires, may be worth checking out; or just ask at a local tire shop for them to hold on to an old one for you -- be sure to tell them it's for off-road use only.

Thanks guys....figured it was worth checking. We will ask if they have any used ones or just add a new one to the tab.

Susannah... I just bought BFG A/Ts last week and I L-O-V-E them. can't stop looking at them. i ended up buying the spare, too, even though i considered skipping it because of the cost. but in the end i think it will be well worth it.

Sus,

Look around and see if you can find a used tire for a decent price in that size. That way you won't have to spend a lot of money on something you won't be using on a normal basis.

Will also do wonders on ABS/ETC if you have either.

Thanks Max....I think if they don't have one in stock, I'll get them to hold one for me if it comes in...otherwise, I can buy new.

Kristin,
My husband has the same tires and we have been impressed with their overall performance. 50K miles on them and still great tread. They tend to clump a little in mud, but are much better than what I WAS running!

Sus,
go ahead and buy 5 and rotate the spare in.

With A/Ts in that size and 5 tires taking the wear, they will last forever!

I have 6 of them and they will not wear out despite my desire for bigger tires.

say,
who wants to buy 6 245/75 A/Ts with 10k miles on the set?
lol.

oh yeah huh.

I bought two extra freestlye alloys here on dweb pretty cheap to make my set complete.

'spose you could go that route and get one alloy to match. shouldn't cost you more than 50 or 75 bucks and it will be worth it in tire life.

Sus,
I have 2 Yokohama Geolandar AT's with decent tread in the 245/75/16 size. You're welcome to one for the cost of shipping. I'm in Baltimore. I install a lot of these tires on customer's Rovers and have found them to wear well and quietly. Good off-road as well.

Sus,
I agree with getting all five and rotating in. I did the same with my 265's.

Sus,

It kinda sounds like if Paul had his way, you'd have "Grave Digger" painted on the side of your truck by the time he was done with it. :-)

Sus,
Sorry for wandering off-topic, but I was looking at your pics, and was wondering if the fellow in the night-time pic towards the end is Aaron Thompson? If so, tell him Alan says hi from Blacksburg ...
Thanks!

Alan Foster - you can tell me "hi" right here dude. :-) that's me in the pick with Sus and Gwagenbabe. and my last name is spelled without a "p". ;) you got pics of your Disco somewhere? who was the lucky individual that got your D90?

Sus - good to hear you're finally getting some better tires! :-) you'll love them. mine have about 40K on them now and them still have plenty of tread. my Disco is having issues though and i think she's pushing me to sell her. :-( and to answer your question in the '05 Disco thread, yeah i'm still around, but i did move to NoVA. i'm planning on running Shoe Creek this summer, i'll let you know when.

Paul, did you miss that thread about the cheerleading outfits and the D-web women video? J/K :-) Step by step my friend!

Alan, I think you're right. He just likes the idea of a chick with a big rig...atleast, a chick who's not a redneck!

I have a nice fat 275 sitting on my ass courtesy of the previous owner while I run 225 Toyo A/Ts.

I just can't wait to get a flat. Maybe people will think I'm pimpin' a new hydraulic system.
