I was doing my usual browsing through the BJ's tire section on my long-cut towards the diaper isle and saw these...

What caught my eye was the deep, well-siped tread. Looks like a great all-purpose tire for a DD truck or SUV. looks like it would really tackle the snow and ice, yet stand up to lots of dirt roads, etc. Also shouldn't be as loud as the BFG AT's or Dunlop R/T's on the road. (They were $100 each in 245/75-16 btw)

Anyway, saw them, thought they were interesting, just passing it along.

Back when I was at the tire shop, we usually installed those on commercial and construction vehicles. Large vans, trucks, etc. A few guys put them on thier normal drivers, but they weren't too popular for that application. They aren't known to ride as well as the normal BFG's, but the vehicles we installed them on were so stiff anyways it didn't make a difference.

David,

These are the Trac-Edge replacements in the BFG line-up. I put them on my wife's Disco a year ago, thinking along the same lines you were: aggressive enough, yet should have been good on the road, for less money than the ATs.

When they were brand new, they were fine. However, they didn't stay that way.... the tread-blocks "squished" out, the rears developed a sawtooth pattern rather quickly, in a couple of months, and one of the fronts won't hold air. I didn't notice it quick enough since it was the wife's vehicle, but once she started complaining, I looked into it. Once the saw-tooth pattern develops, the tires become very loud. When new, they were quieter than the Dunlop R/Ts that I previously had, but they are now louder than the R/Ts ever were.

We'll be replacing them soon, and won't be going back with them. Will probably ante up the difference to go with the BFG-AT's next instead... I'd go with the R/Ts if it was for me, but since it's the wife's, and, BFG is easier to find on sale than Dunlops, well....

FWIW.....

leslie,

Good to know, I thought they were very Trac-Edge-ish which is why I brought them up.

I ran the Dunlop R/Ts on my 1st gen Trooper and loved them on road, off road, and in winter. I've also run BFG AT's and I actually prefer the Dunlops (much cheaper too).

I have the Dunlap's on my '85 Range Rover for over 30k miles and love them. I've used the truck extensively in mud, snow and on rocks and these tires have never disappointed me. I plan on installing R/T's on my '89 RRC later this spring. It's my feeling that their overall performance is very similar to the BFGoodrich Trac-Edge tires I have on my Series III.

Well, I managed to find a good deal on the Dunlops for once, which Sears matched (and beat by a bit), so the R/Ts are ordered for the wife's Disco now. No, it's not a full-blown mud-tire like the XZLs on the Series, but it's better than most ATs out there....

FWIW: Have you all noticed that the steel Land Rover rims are made by Dunlop?

Well, interesting.... Sears just called, although it's in the catalog, the R/T in her size is indefinitely backordered, so, they switched up to the BFG T/A KO for us, without charging us the difference...

I wouldn't have gone back to the Commercial T/A-traction, but the T/A-ko should be fine.... we'll give 'em a go and see how it goes.....
