Autoweek reports-
"Calling the new Discovery the LR3 conveniently leaves room for the next Freelander to be called the LR2, Eastwood concedes."

Hey, that leaves room for the Defender as LR1. We can only hope...

I'm not a big fan of alphnumeric designations. Kinda lose some of the vehicle's character or at least I think it will with LR. I think it will just blend in with everything else out there.

Someone comes up and says, "I just bought an LR3".

"Great, how much RAM does the chip need??"

Kinda makes you wonder what R2-D2's REAL name was.

AHAHAHAAAAA!!! That was funny Peter.

Yea, there definitely exceptions like the M3 and M5 but I'm not sure that will ever happen with LR. Not really sure what that LRNA marketing exec was saying is true. You tell someone you drive a Land Rover and they think it's a Toyota. I've never had anyone make that mistake when I say "Discovery". They seem to recognize it's a Land Rover and that it had something to do with the Camel Trophy but even those who didn't know what the Camel Trophy was, they identified "Discovery" with LR. This "LR3" thing seems to fall into the Acura "TL" stuff they do now. I instantly identify "Legend" with Acura but telling me it's a 3.2TL doesn't drive that same character. It feels bland and cookie-cutterish to me.

But you're right Jaime, M3 and M5 is very distinctive.

you can also see Ford's influence with Mazda in the same direction. Mazda3; Mazda6; RX 8.

Chyrsler trying it with the 300C.

DB6 also conjures up some good mental pics. of a nice car. 356SC as well as a XKE.

totally agree though not many marques can capture a vision with letter/number combos. one can only wonder why LR is trying it here.

tough sell to the public unless the product is very impressive imho.

Here's where Land Rover is wrong. Think Range Rover and Discovery. What do those model names communicate? Now think LR3. What does LR3 communicate? Nothing. Land Rovers 3rd vehicle? Wow. It's along the same lines as the artsy emblems that car companies now put on the back of their vehicles instead of the model/name spelled out. To me they have lost their identity. Then again maybe that's what these companies want, to be like everyone else. When I see a scripted H on the back of vehicle is it Honda or Hyundai, who cares. I think the Marketing department needs to go back to high school.

Or perhaps 360? Although it is followed by Modena.

The Shtick is promoting the Land Rover brand. See, we all interact with each other based on which model we own. While that is likely to stay the same for LR enthusiasts, I can see the masses just talking about their "Land Rover" model be damned.
Acura had this big study in the early 90's in which they determined that their efforts to create a brand identity were lost on the name Acura, and that only the word "Legend" meant anything to people. Acura cited positive response to all their vehicles, but still less market than Lexus, even though Acuras were cheaper across the board. Sadly, it works...I'm sure nobody ever says in casual conversation, "lets take the TL to the mall"
Count on it...I bet a high percentage of BMWs and MBs are sold on the basis of brand not model, whereas Camry 4Runner Civic and Accord buyers are buying nameplates, not brands. Some market study has probably determined already that as soon as they dump the Freelander name and start calling it the LR*, the individual rep of the car will mean squat, because, hey...it's a "Land Rover"

That's well and good James. But everyone still calls Jamil's Disco a jeep.

As in:
"eh BOY, that's a damn fine jeep you got there... What model jeep is that?"

-excerpts from the Maine Turnpike.
