Just curious about the 03s and any things to watch out for. Are valves still an issue? Non-svcble u-joints? I know, no CDL. Thanks

t-case. everything is under warranty, why worry? if it breaks, unless it's Really ABUSED or hi mileage, it's covered.

Got mine back in Aug '03 and have 7500 miles. Taken some pretty good off-road abuse so far and only 2 things have gone bad: cd changer need to be swapped out and left windshield wiper stopped working.

Haven’t turned it in for the 7500 mile check-up though.

I just rolled over 33,000 on my 03 purchased in late July/early August of 02. The power steering pump and stereo head unit were replaced under warranty.

Aside from the apparently normal Land Rover dash rattles and vibrations, it hasn't given me any trouble. Fuel mileage around town is horrible, but 18-19mpg at 75mph on rural Interstates isn't uncommon. The low rpm torque also makes it a pretty good tow vehicle.

Have 12000, have had absolutely no problems. There is a slight surging with the cruise control, will have them look at that at the 15k check. I live at 4000ft so driving up the mountain kills the gas mileage, what little there was!

I have 24,000 on mine and no major problems so far. My fender flares were replace due to excessive fading. Other than that everything seems to be fine. My truck seems to be surging under cruise control as well. I wonder if that is common?

Chemist44/Jack, I have/had the surge in my 03, there is a bulletin on it, they reflash the computer and it settles it down alot. It's doesnt go away but it's better. Also, there is a bulletin on the headlight delay, you hold down the button on your key fob and the headlights stay on for a minute or so.

re:the original question, had a big problem with the coils on mine and really poor engine performance and missing welds along the front windshield that caused water leaks, both were taken care of by the dealer. With the exception of 12 mpg around town I love this truck.

Did the non-servicable u-joints get fixed? Do the 03-04s come with them. There's been a lot of failures due to this. The squeaking and vibe develops and then you're on a flatbed with a hole in your transmission.

sorry... don't know anything about u-joints. however, i've got a little over 8000 miles on my '03 and just had my t-case replaced. one other small issue: the first time driving it in the rain i turned my wipers on and they immediately quit working. aggravating but fixable. otherwise, i love it! (having a warranty makes it a lot easier to love...)

I have an '04 with 7500 miles on it. I have had one problem that left me stranded and a few other small issues. At 6000 miles a transmission line split dumping all of my transmission fluid. Got towed and the dealer fixed the problem in a day. The rear springs/shocks were replaced early on because of squeeking (subsequently replaced with OME) and I had the service engine light come on last week for a problem with the MAF sensor (dealer ordering part). My transfer case was whining at 70mph or so but dealer said it was "within acceptable limits" and when I drove an '03 it whined also. Fixed this by getting bigger tires. Now it whines at 80 mph:-)

Even with the few inconveniences, I love my truck!

My 99 has the cruise surging problem also. Is there a website where I can look up the service bullitins?

I have an O3 SE with just over 19000 miles and it seems that I need to take it to the dealership at least once a month to get something replaced and/or fixed. The problem with having to take it to the dealership every month is that the nearest dealership to me is 7 hours away. Reliability on my DII SUCKS!! But I do love the truck even with all of its problems.

Guess I'm lucky. Took delivery in June '03 of '03 Disco. Now 10,000+ miles. 2 weeks at Moab on some pretty good trails, a month of "exploring" fire trails, etc in Montana, a few weekends at Hollister Hills. Not great gas mileage the way I drive it, but no problems other than a few squeeks and rattles. I'm a happy camper! Ray

F.Y.I. I've got an '00 w/56,000 miles on the odo. Only thing I've replaced on the truck are two batteries and one tire. Driver's side window regulator was replaced under warranty. Pretty much zero problems since brand new. Noisy, squeaky, rattly, but zero mechanical problems and unbelievably reliable. This one's a keeper!

It only took 3 minutes to fix the cruise control, thanks Bryan. It was a computer setting and now it performs smoothly.

I've got an 03 with 9500 miles on it and have gone through a number of visits to the dealer. The Discovery is an excellent vehicle except for the quality issues. Hopefully I've gotten through most, if not all of them. Anyways, this is what I've had to deal with.

1. Oil pump failure leading to 20 day stay at dealership for new engine.
2. Leaking windshield at A-pillars (3 visits)
3. Leaking rear main seal (1 visit)

The good thing is that all of this has been covered under warranty and that my dealership has provided a Freelander rental each time.

Sounds like the first 1000-35,000 miles on the old Discovery I's. When I went to buy my DI, I specifically wanted a used one with more than 40k on it because my research showed that after all the "niggles and wiggles" were worked out these trucks end up running for a good long time when taken care of.

That said, she does perform better when washed and when taken off road. Like Ray, the rest of you should get your DII's out on some trails, get their self esteme up, get the fluids running with some trail adrenalin - does wonders for your Land Rover.

I've got 12K on my 03 and no probs, no rattles or squeeks, no nothing. Drives and rides like a beauty....filling it up with $1.85 premium sucks though.

$2.49 in Nor Cal yesterday. . .
We haven't seen sub-$2.00 premium prices in a LONG time.

Hey Lance,
If you're Mr. "WHYT H2O" in Dublin, you've been spotted on the Mendo board by Chris DeJesus.
Anyway, going to Mendo?

Rupert,

That's me! Unfortunatly, I can't make Mendo as I've used up my allocation of "away from the family weekends" for the month (too much WHYTH2O :-)). I live in Danville but pass through Dublin often.

Where can I find the Mendo board?

Kevin,

Which North Fork are you referring to? NF American is up, NF Kings is up, NF Stanislaus is up, NF Yuba is up. . . you get my drift :-)

Most major rivers are up right now, though the cool weather this week may change that.

I had a 2000 D2 and traded it for a 03 with 9k on it. I have put 3k in the past 5 weeks. (trip from Chicago to Houston and back in there) I was getting 19 mpg and this thing has more power. I have not fixed my cruise control surge yet. (very noticeable)

This is a keeper, I love it.
