I was reading the thread on music and thought I would try the Country song that everybody was talking about: "Chicks Dig It". I don't really listen to Country music but I like the beat of that song. I would appreciate it if you guys, or gals, can give me recommend some songs like this to me. Thanks.

Please don't recommend the slow country songs. They make me sad!

Just look at cmt.com they usually have free audio of the new songs and you can get a lot from there. Try Gretchen Wilsons "Redneck Girls" its a pretty good song. There are many funny songs on the new Toby Keith album especially the Taliban song. One guy that is really awesome is Blake Shelton. It really depends on what you are looking for.

Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney...words cannot describe how ill I become just hearing those names. I think it's redneck rap music for the most part, not country music. If you want real country check out www.waynehancock.com or pick up some Hank Sr. CDs at the local truck stop.

I gotta agree with Robert. I dislike commercialized pop music of any form but country pop seems to be the worst.
I had to bite my tongue on the last music thread but now I just can't help myself.
The music I like may not be everyone's ideal but it is made by real muscians and not recording studio producers trying to churn out the next big hit.
Try the local college stations. Not always the greatest music but they will play the music that the pop-driven main stream stations won't play.
Support your local bar bands, not the pop 40 radio parrots but the real musicians. They're out there.
On a side note, The Nighthawks are playing in Harrisonburg at The Pub in May. That's a show I plan on being at.
Thank's for reading my music rant.

Hey Walter,
I liked Nickle Creek before they made it big. Now that they hit the big time do I have to stop liking them? And how about Alison Kraus and Union Station there big time too now and they used to play college stations. The list of artists I like seems to be getting smaller.

TIM MCGRAW--Where the Green Grass Grows
DIERKS BENTLEY-What was I thinkin'
PAT GREEN- Southbound 35, three days
AARON TIPPIN- Big Boy Toys
BRAD PAISLEY-I'm Gonna Miss Her, Mud on the Tires

I could go on but I dont want to give you too many to look for. Check these out. And Robert, check out the collection of music at the little truck stop off the Racoon Vally Exit (117 on I-75). I think they have mostly cassetes though.

Hey Kevin. You hit the nail on the head when you said "artist".
Are you going to listen to me to determine what to like? I hope to hell not!
On the rock side, have you paid attention to the Red Hot Chili Peppers? Since going top- 40 they pretty much suck. I keep buying they're cd's under the hope that the music isn't totally market driven. Listen to they're early stuff and the music is fresh and innovative. Don't even get me started on Aerosmith! When did Steven Tyler lose his penis?
Wanna hear something funny? In the late 70's early 80's I loved Cheap Trick. Pretty good power pop and Rick Nealson was"is" a kick ass guitar player.
It's unfortunate that the radio stations in my area only choose to play "proven" music. Won't hear anything new in the 'burg.

Oh yeah. Try some Bottle Rockets from the Alternative Country section. Good rockabilly licks with thoughtful lyrics that may not always rhyme.

I pretty much listen to coutry or bluegrass now. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Steve Earle and the Del McCory's maybe Niel Young when I am cruiin under a full moon in Death Valley. Sad to say I kind of stopped listening to rock, to much angst, I got tired of people complaining about how bad life is. Country may have a sad song or two but there is usualy hope at the end of the song.

BJ- I see your College Station not too far from me. We should hit the trails sometime. We have another friend in College Station with a Rangie that is part of TAMOR - are you part of that club? Also, he is meeting us to go to the SCARR event (April 30) up at Barnwell if you are interested (Texas Rovers is hosting the event).
Let me know if your interested.

pop country is gay. i try and stick with the real musicians that can actually play REAL instruments and write their own songs. good songs. none of this "tear in my beer" shit. stick with.........

Johnny Cash
Wilco
Billy Bragg
Steve Earle
Son Volt
Whiskeytown
Buck Owens and his Buckaroos
Dwight Yoakum
Waylon Jennings
Hank Williams
Old 97's

otherwise head to your favorite NASCAR bar in your jacked up Ford Ranger with Mickey Thompsons, order up a nice Bud Light, talk about bass fishing and how your toothless sister just got knocked up by the local taxidermist.

ps: hey robert...good pick...wayne 'the train' hancock plays here in town every few months. amazing stuff. makes you wonder how people can listen to Garth and other Disneyland country shit.

Nice list Garrett. Here is a correllation: Real 4WD, vs Poser, Real Country music vs, Poser Country Pop. I can bearly stand it when I hit a New Country staton when I am scanning stations. Of course, I am an old bluegrasser myself, so I tend to lean "back" in time.

Hank Snow
Reno & Smiley
Clarence White
Country Gazette
Newgrass Revival
Asleep at the Wheel
Doc Watson
Merle Travis
Emmylou Harris
The Whites

It is good to listen to a song that wasn't "developed" around a catch phrase or a cliche'.'

Good to see Johnny at the top of your list Garret.

Everyone should go see Bela Fleck, no one can play like he does. Victer Wootens bass kicks ass and then there is Future Man, check out the Synthaxe drumitar.

http://www.flecktones.com/the_guys/futch.asp

The first time I saw them, I kept looking for the drums/drummer. LOL.

Bela definitely redefines Bluegrass.

Lets all meet up in Telluride for the festival, we can get some good wheeling in too.

yeh there is no reason not to have Johnny at the top. he and his wife pretty much embody the soul of real county. they were truly a class act that no one will be able to replicate. good people that knew only one way to do things.....done right without sacrificing anything.
my ex was a huge Bela fan. named her dog Bela. haha. have 'Live at the Quick' right here in front of me.
listened to Alison Krauss and The Jayhawks on my 5.5 hour ride from Saratoga Springs, NY last night. can't leave them out.
i owe alot of my listening habits to WXPN in Philly. love that station.

for those of you that are out of earshot, the best alt-country radio station on the planet, from right here in Dallas Texas, 95.3 KHYI the Range can also be heard on the internet at www.khyi.com

Check em out, they have listeners from all over the world and might educate those of you that don't know any better, that Toby Keith ain't country. :-)

Pat Green-"Live and Loud at Billy Bob's Texas" has a great mixture of his songs.

Cross Canadian Ragweed-Great band from Stillwater, OK. Songs like "Carney Man", "Boys from Oklahoma", "President's Song", "Bang my Head" can't be beat. You really can't go wrong with any of CCR's music, it's all great.

Cory Morrow-Another great singer/songwriter from here in Texas. "Big City Stripper", "Nashville Blues", and "Beer" make for great listening.

That IS some good stuff, Ray. Amazing what you get when you pull great talent together. Old and in the Way was another good effort along those lines.

Sorry, Jack. I are a hillbilly and reckon that stuff is just mighty fine. :-)

I think many of us were purposefully avoiding posting and coutry pop artists. Read the thread closely. Any how, I don't despise him, just so many country artists to listen to, and it is not my favorite music either.
