what's everyone's local land rover dealer's labor rate. Cole European is the only local one and ther up in the ninetys. I think it might have something to do with the fact that it's a Jaguar and Aston Martin dealer also. Anyone know of cheaper Land Rover specialist shops within a 50 mile radius?

 Cheers

 Jack

My local mechanic who knows almost nothing about LR's, but a lot about just about every other vehicle, only charges $25 an hour. And its only $12 for an oil change, but if you buy your tires there too (which are reasonably priced) then when you get the tire rotated, you can even bring in your own oil and filter and they will do it for free.

You've got to love small towns.

No extra charge for the dumb stares and stupid excuses either.

The last time I took it in...

Them- "We had our shop foreman work on yours..."
Me- "So he is the guy that erased the memory of my NAV system, dropped my XM remote and stepped on it, then broke the $300 spotlamp on the roof?"
Them- "Um, well... the bill is $387.33"

Land Rover Harrisburg is $84/flat rate hour, Land Rover $85/ flat rate hour and I am still at $82.50 for any hour (or less for any portion of an hour). And, you call me and get the owner! My guys are all salaried, so they can take all the reasonable time they need to get the job done right, not just fast.

Land Rover Harrisburg is $84 and Land Rover Hunt Valley is $85 per flat rate hour. I'm $82.50 for any hour (or less for any portion of an hour). Also, when you call here, you get the owner, most of the time. My guys are all salaried so they can take all the reasonable time they need to get the job done right, not just fast.
Sorry, couldn't resist the shameless plug.

Mine is up to 130.00! Which just pisses me off to no avail!!! You know when I graduate Law School there is absolutely no guarantee that I will bring in 130.00 an hour without working @ least 90 billable hours a week. It is just asinine! Sorry for the soap box here--I feel very strongly about this issue.

It took the dealership four times (to get the order right) on the little green lights for me. They could not figure out what they were or furthermore where they went! I had to show them! And they want a 130.00 an hour?? I guess the fact that they also service Hummer's, Cadillac Escapade's, and the Porsche Cayenne play into the labor rate as well. OK- I am done complaining for now.

You know, if they were just damned good I'd pay it. Problem is they are part swappers on my dime. I'd rather they test and diagnose based on experience than ask a laptop what's wrong. Many of the "techs" don't understand the basic principles of an internal combustion engine.
I guess it's hard to get good help, but they shouldn't charge $130/hr for some illegal alien to change my oil- but I'd expect to pay top dollar for a Land Rover God to impart wisdom into the diagnosis of a problem.

Melissa - you graduated law school and getting pissed at mechanics who makes like 20$/hour tops? Rate that dealership charges has nothing to do with how much mechanics getting paid.

However local bod on next corner, who owns its own place and charges his 65$/h rate may be better option
Specially if you got RAVE CD and print out related pages from manual Not to mention that with private shops you can negotiate.
Also - face it folkz. If they wouldnt charge you that much - how many of us would really get dirty hands with our vehicles

And Joey - being in small town has nothing to do with it
I am in small town and nearly all local places will try to bend you over (how about asking for 460+$ for brake job, sounds?), no matter how small they are. Then again - i found three shops that do good job at decent rates. Nothing as low as yours though |

I am in North Carolina. I had my ride at Land ROver cary I think they were chargin close if not excedeing 95$ an hour. dont quote me I am under the influence, I now take my truck to Rover CLubhouse in Durham NC. they are toprate. they wheel thier trucks and are enthusisists. I think they charged me around 80 an hour. I like them they are down to earth and I dont get yelled out when I go to check out what they are doing to my truck. I reccomend them for any NC rover owners. I have heard a number of good things about flying Circus auto cars? At any rate my 90 wont go any place other that the Rover Clubhouse.

Sergei: """how many of us would really get dirty hands with our vehicles""" I like you alot man, but got to tell you that I spent 5 hours today changing front and rear pads, both fog lights, oil change and flushed the coolant out, and attempted to fix the cruise control (no luck-must be the vacumm pump). I busted my damn forehead on the front tow shackle, got covered in dirt, oil, and grime. So maybe I am cheap--or maybe I just like doing it myself(this way I know that it is done right)..I am not trying to start a war here nonetheless, fact of the matter is that 130.00 an hour is insane. Period. Lord Lucas himself better be the one working on my truck for 130.00 an hour.
And I am not mad @ the mechanics, but more frustrated with the dealership for over-charging the consumer ( of course where I live there is only one dealership and in turn this is causing a bit of a monopoly).

The trick is finding the little repair shop that specialises in Land Rover's. In central florida C&H auto serivice is the place to go. Paul watt's will take care of you. I don't mind doing the stuff myself, it's more the pain in the ass of having your car off the road for weeks when you have to pull the engine and replace all the seals and bearings. and i'm going to have to do the transfer case aswell...in the driveway. I know how dealers work and they take their time on the work and charge you for more hours than they actualy spent doing it. That's what really tee's me off.

LOL. I know feeling, beeing quite a big guy. I have more scratches on my hands and shoulders from working on my Disco than i had for a long time, since i was kid.
I am not saying we are cheap, doing things ourselves. But there is thin balance, and i, personally, like to pay guy at local shop 35$ for getting old bushings out and new ones in for radius arms & panhard rod, rather than doing it myself ever again
  Its simply not worth it.
I agree that dealerships overcharging us big times, and not only LR ones. In fact big mechanics shops do same. They have too much cost overhead to cover, like management, rent & etc.

Melissa - for the jobs you don't want to tackle I would think there would be an independent shop in your city that works on Rovers. There labor rate would be less than a dealership since there overhead is alot less. Also, with small places once they get to know you they're more apt to work deals with you. I have worked for L.R. and Volvo and our Volvo dealer charges more than our L.R. dealer. Remember to, the techs only get paid by flat rate so depending upon how much he makes and what the job hours are is what he gets paid for. (If the job takes the person longer or shorter amount of time it doesn't matter he only gets what the book amount says) So yes, dealers do pocket alot of money from the consumer. More parts dept. are making more money than service now! LOL Sucks for me though.

OK GUYS LET me Re--Iterate that I know that the mechanics DO NOT MAKE A 130.00 an hour if that was the case I would be a mechanic
"Certified Master Land Roverchic" Hmmmm ??? Most of the time I do enjoy working on my rover, I just do not like getting hurt! Trey no luck on local mechanics (none that I would trust- furthermore most of them want to keep the rover for like 2 weeks- No can do) Luckily though my uncle is a race car driver and has an incredible garage full of tools! I love the impact wrench Roverchic |
