There is a company called Adventuretrex www.adventuretrex.com that advertises Four Wheeling trips in Belize in D-90's. It is run by a man named Graham Herbert. I paid my money to the S.O.B. only to have him cancel my trip two weeks before and then not refund my cash or return my many e-mails/phone calls. Graham used to operate a website called Land Rover Zone as well. If anyone knows where I can get hold of him, please let me know. He currently advertises LR trips to Belize, Africa and the USA. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH ADVENTURETREX!!!

Go hang out at

P.O. Box 3268, Covina, CA 91721 USA

and see who is picking up the mail. Make old Graham an offer to refund your money that he just can't refuse.

Man...sorry to hear about your misfortunes with this company.

One would think that those crappy-assed photo-chopped pictures with the 'inserted' logo would be enough to deter further inquiries or any business dealings. I would bet those were all stolen from the web.

Hope you get your money back.

The site says $1750 for two people one vehicle and $500 deposit. I hope you didn't lose the whole sum. Find him and get a good lawyer. It is not cool to get scammed.

Glen,
Yes, in retrospect there were lots of warning signs - including the fact that the "busines" phone is a cell. He did have a physical address a year ago when I started contacting him (today is only a P.O. box -with a fictitious zip by the way) I was sort of lulled into complacency by an article on the company which appeared in LROI last year which gave it some legitimacy in my eyes I suppose.
Ryan - he did not take me for quite that much - but it was plenty enough to make me feel like a complete idiot. I just want to make sure no one else gets burned by this guy.

You have to love the Rover Community. From a contact I made this morning at the Southern California Land Rovers, I got Mr. Herberts place of employment and phone number. I just got off the phone with him. I think things will progress from here. Thanks everyone!

I would also contact the Better Business Bureau and Consumer Affairs. There might be enough info on this guy to track him.

Hey Ted - we're joining in on a trip down to Belize & Guatemala in late August. Don't know how that fits in your time frame but at least it is legit.

So Alyssa, you actually met this character?! at MAR? Damn...pretty bold of him to show up at those places and scam people.

There's obviously always two sides to every story but just judging by that website, I think his credibility is as credible as those stolen 'borrowed' pictures he shows with the crappy inserted logo. CRUCIFY HIM!!!

Uh .. As a rule, I am basically against crucifictions. I really just want my money back. As I said, someone in the Rover Community was kind enough to send me the name and address of Graham's employer and his work number. Now that I have located him, I am pretty confident of being paid. If not, I am sure that LRNA and Ford Motor company will be interested to know about someone associating the Land Rover brand name with a seedy business (they have more expensive lawyers than I do.)

John,
There is always another side to every story - agreed. And based on the info in your profile, I can gues that you know or work with Mr. Herbert. But I can tell you these facts from THIS side of the story. On 2/21/04 Adventuretrex sent me a notice that my trip was cancelled and stated I would rec. a refund in 10 days. I e-mailed and phoned Graham EVERY DAY from then to yesterday with NO RESPONSE an NO REFUND. That is a fact. It is also a FACT that the Adventuretrex phone number belongs to a pre-paid cell phone which makes it almost untraceable. I finally rec'd and e-mail from Adventuretrex THIS MORNING after reaching out to D-web and several other Rover-oriented boards/lists and tracking Graham down and contacting him at his place of employment. That e-mail said, basically, "check is in the mail" If I recieve my refund I will inform everyone on this board.
Yes there are always two sides to every story - I cannnot tell you what the other side is, because I had NO communication for two months from Adventuretrex, and whatever the other side is, no communication is a bad way to conduct business.

sorry for the rant.

cheers,

If this interests others so much and before you pass judgement and start to crucify, get both sides of the story. Before Graham began working with me, he was a very respected Sales Guide at a competative LR dealer. Now, as a manager, he is an asset. I also had purchased many CT items from him in the past. He was the 'go to' guy in the states for that stuff. Some of you may have even met him and purchased quality items at MAR. I and others in the LR community, have nothing but respect for Graham. Don't believe everything people post on the internet.

i had a 'similar' situation a few years back. i was not getting an item i paid for and i eventually came to DWEB to bitch. several months pasted and i FINALLY got a response back after several postings bashing this fella. apparently he was in a very bad accident and in a coma for a long time. needless to say i felt like shit for bashing him and posted that on DWEB.
now i am going through a similar situation with John Miller from N. Carolina. sent me a VERY leaky 4.0 and now he won't return my emails and the shipping company that sent it is not getting paid either. they are calling me and trying to find out the deal. not to mention he overcharged me for shipping.
so this time i am being a little more careful before i jump all over his shit. it's hard because i really want to go down and use Blue's method (a soaked 2x4) and beat his ass, but i will wait a little longer.
hoping this dude is not in a coma, but i might feel like putting him in the ICU soon. :-)
regardless i am with Ted on this still. it is hard to bite your tongue when you are getting hosed for a lot of cash. someone fucked up and it wasn't Ted.

Not returning calls when you operate a business in inexcusable. Unless some horrific event occured and everybody who worked at/knew of Adventuretrex is incapacitated and unable to answer the phone/email, then Ted should have been contacted.

Even a "Dear Ted, this is a simple note to inform you that Graham was leading a tour of Borneo when a very heavy rock fell on him. Tragically we have not yet been able to remove the rock. Graham will contact you as soon as possible, we estimate 2-4 weeks." would have been better than silence.

The guy dropped the ball, and I'm not so sure I'd come to his aide with my company info in my profile...unless I did so with the full scoop.

unfortunately, using a prepaid cell phone from the corner Circle K as "the business line" indicates that Graham Herbert's "adventure trex" business isn't a professionally staffed outfit. If a rock were to fall on Mr. Herbert in Borneo, he'll probaby be there for a while.

John Gadd, you might want to think twice about the responsibility you assign to your "asset" if he is indeed running scams on the side. Not being critical of you at all, just reminding you that when the shit hits the fan, you don't want to be nearby.

Hmm, Roverdudes attitude towards customer service would certainly make me wary of LR Anaheim Hills as well.

I appreciate it when other LR owners post cautionary tales of vendors they have had issues with, so that I can learn from their experiences and send my $$ elsewhere.

Also pretty suspicious that everything on the adventuretrex site disappeared soon after this posting.... someone on the up-and-up would have at least posted some quick explanation instead of wiping everything off the site, IMHO.

Appreciate the post, Ted!

Conor & Garrett,

I too had issues w/ John Miller. I bought a CDL shifter linkage from a DI from him. It took him awhile, but he sent me just the shifter w/ no linkage. I called him and said I got the shifter, but how the hell am I going to engage the CDL when I am missing that part of the linkage? About 4 weeks later, about 15 phone calls and 5 pictures (describing the part I needed) later, he found the linkage and sent it. Reminded me of David C. when I read it that post from weeks ago. I learned my lesson...

Looks like I have to jump in and defend John Gadd's perceived lack of customer service.
The following is the background on why I think John Gadd gave me EXCELLENT customer service on my purchase of a 03 Disco.
I have use of Ford's A plan on vehicle purchases. I had ordered a SPECIFIC Disco from a dealer closer to me. I was willing to wait 6 months for the build from Solihull. I called the salesguide severaltimes to confirm my order, which he did. When the vehicle arrived, it was the WRONG model!
They did not offer to search for a model that I wanted, but had the attitude "take it or leave it". I was VERY angry and believe me I called LRNA and complained.
I happened to see John Gadd's name mentioned in a positive manner in the SCLR board and decided to call him to see if he could help me in purchasing what I wanted. ( I did not think he could find what I needed, but I took a chance.)
He called me back within 24 hrs and found my vehicle in San Luis Obispo, offered to drive to LRAH to avoid shipping charges. I said yes b/c if the vehicle had any "bugs", I figured it still belonged to LR and they would fix it.
My son & I flew down from Sacramento to OC, where John picked us up and took us to the dealership.
We completed the deal and drove back to Red Bluff.
John did NOT have to honor the "A" plan nor offer to drive the vehicle a 100 miles nor pick us up at the airport.
I still consider this EXCELLENT service on his part.
BTW, I still refuse to have any dealings with the original dealer's sales dept. BUT have found their service dept to be excellent.
Which goes to show that in every business there are strong points and weak points.
As for adventuretrex, I have no idea about that issue.

Thank you,

Rupert Jung

would love to have had a new motor, but of course they were not going to go for that. oh well. i will suffer with my leaky motor. that is the next project. oil is EVERYWHERE. hard to find out where it is coming from.

garrett, truck not doing well, should have dished out the remaining $ so you don't have to do it twice.

i guess when you have a lot full of cars to choose from it's not an issue. :-)

Ok I'm not trying to get in the middle of things and I do appreciate learning of bad dealings. However, I got a LT230Q transer box from John Miller in North Carolina and I had EXCELLENT service from him. Not only was he patient with me, he informed me of info. that I needed to know on the part, he is friendly to work with, and he is an HONEST man. On top of all that, compared to what others wanted to sale me the part for I got a good deal from John. Just from some of the stories he has told me of dealings he has had with others - I know I can count on him. As he has done with others, he too imformed me, that if I had any major problems with the t-case not working right that I could send it back with no problems. I highly recommend using John Miller for dealings and have had nothing but positive response from him.
Again, I am not trying to get in the middle of misunderstandings but I do feel the need to stand by someone that has done nothing but good by me and I am sure of others as well.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I phoned Graham today at his place of employment to inform him that I still had not rec'd the check which he assured me was in the mail on Monday - He agreed to overnight a check if I still haven't rec'd his by tomorrow. For some reason, I believe him. As promised, I will post to this board once I have my money.

cheers,

Ted

My only dealings with Graham were very positive at MAR a couple years back. He gave my kid a very nice brass Land Rover keychain that was worth about $30.
I asked about a specific Rover dog collar I wanted and he said he'd have to look for it and "get back to me" which is usually salesman talk for "yeah, blow me."
He came and found me after he spent an hour digging through his stuff and the gave it to me cheaper than I've ever seen one.
I think he's a well intentioned kinda guy, but that's no consolation when he's holding your $.

I nearly bought a D1 headlight from this "John Miller" fellow. I was gonna send the money order tomorrow, then I read this thread.

I won't pass any judgements on his character or integrity, but it seems when all you have is an AOL email address and a PO Box...and then people post horror stories on Dweb... When money's involved in anonymous transactions, I feel a vendor should have nothing less than a stellar reputation.

Interesting email from Roverdude:

quote:

Pugsly,
You have absolutely NO PLACE in questioning anything about me. You don't know me nor have conducted any business with me. Because I come to the defense of a colleage you would actually question how I do business. I challange you to contact some of my customers like Craig Kobyashi or a fellow member of LRNC, Rupert Jung, regarding my customer service. It's so easy to post a negative opinion on a website board. But understand this, you have questioned my livelyhood. Until an apology is made, I take offense to your comment! I'm sure my companies owner would not like to see this either.

Guess I struck a nerve?

What he says is true, I've never conducted business with him, but I do kinda believe that potential customers have the right to question potential vendors, and one of the ways we can assess a potential vendor is by seeing who they hang with. That's why I tend to check with BBB and state licensing boards before I hire contractors, for example.

If you vouch for another business, you are tying your rep to theirs, plain and simple.

My experience with Graham
I purchased a Land Rover Shirt from him at MAR a couple of years ago. I tried it on later in camp, it was too small and I returned it to him on Sunday. He didn't have a larger size and he agreed to send me one when he got back home.
I didn't hear from him and began emails.
Still nothing. Since I paid by MC, I disputed the charge and the money was returned.
I never heard from him.
My .02, stay clear and call an attorney.

It is important to note that I did receive what I paid for, but with all of the labor involved on my part to get it, one begins to wonder if it was truly worth it.

Maybe Nathan, EE, etc., should start parting out trucks and selling used parts; we could then feel more assured about our purchases.

I purchased floor mats from Graham on eBay. No problems with that transaction. Purchased some CT gear from him, he shorted me on one item. Sent me a refund check. When the item was in stock he shipped it out without contacting me. After I got the goods he called and asked me for payment.

Hello There,

This is John Miller, I would like to get somthing out in the open inso far as Mr. Garrett, I sold him a 4.0 RR engine for $1500.00 plus freight. I told him to install new valve cover gaskets and a rear main seal I do not believe he replaced them. This is standard to do when you remove and install an engine. I have sold three or four RR motors and advised every one of them to replace the rear seal and valve cover gaskets.I would be happy to foward their email addresses to confirm .
I got two emails from Mr. Garrett about his leaky motor which the rear main seal is leaking along with valve cover gaskets.. I thought I answered him. No phone calls from him. I will admit I have had some problems sending and recieving emails lately. But I always and I mean always return phone calls. I was notified by a customer in Texas about this site having a negative post from Mr. Garrett about me.
In light of all of this . I will try to help Mr. Garrett if it is possible to do so. I emailed him yesterday and today along with my phone #'s. I have had no response from him.
I will be happy to try to help him with his issues. But I belive the motor runs fine other than leaking. I even performed a compression test on it when I had it.
I do sell parts for range rovers and disco's. I try to give good deals and be fair with people I deal with. Hopefully some past people I have dealt with will see this and post their experiences dealing with me.
Oh, and Spencer Marks I am really sorry I did not ship all of your parts at once. They were misplaced and later sent to you as I was moving at the time and things got a little disorganized. I sent you a RR shop manual cd for the inconvience. I suppose that was still unsatisfactory for you.
In closing I presently plan to be at Uwharrie.
Maybe some of you fellows will be there.

Just a dumb ol country boy.

I bought 4 rims for my D1 from John Miller. He was great to deal with. I have nothing but good things to say about him. I need another rim becuase a fellow D1 owner "borrowed" my spare during the night. John is the only guy I thought of when it came to getting another rim.

Call him and talk to him. He's a good guy. I think he parts out Rovers part time. Talk to him, he'll take care of you.
