I'm using the LR bike rack (seems to be the same as the BMW ones) which holds 2 bikes. It also has an extension which lets it hold another 2 bikes. It works really well, and there's only a tiny bit of wobble. It looks like this: http://www.roverconnection.com/Disco%20Acc%20Pix/bikerack.htm . I can take some pictures if you want to see it.

Edit: It's made of some really strong/thick steel (pretty sure it's steel, with the weight), and was a snap to assemble and install.

The Yakima stuff is fairly good as well. www.yakima.com
Plus you can add in a ski holder if you are into skiing. Saves a bit on buying another hitch mounted ski attachment.

thanks for the comments - Nicholas, is there any damage to your bikes as a result of the wobble, i.e. rubbing paint, cable pulling?

David
I have run the LR bike rack on both the Freelander and the Disco with no problems and no damage to the bikes. You can buy the same exact rack from at the mart.com for much less. It only lacks the LR oval on it. $200 for the rack there compared to $350-450 elsewhere.

If you go the picture section (under Freelander) you will see my old Disco set up with this rack.

I haven't had any problems with rubbing or damage. The point where the top tube rests is rubber-padded, and so is the locking thing on the top. I'll take some pictures of it when I get a chance later. The rack also came with a "wobble stick" and some clips/tie-downs to secure the bike

Just out of curiosity, what kind of biking do you do? What type of bike?

Have two bikes right now. Trek 5400 road bike. Training for some triathlons. I also have a team zascar le GT mountain bike. My wife also rides and this would be to transport our road bikes to some triathlons races. Some we will be traveling long distances on the highway, so I want to make sure I get a good rack . One to protect the bikes and also so the rack holds up well over time and use.

I really like the Thule 998 Trailblazer. http://www.thuleracks.com/thule/product.asp?dept_id=8&sku=998
I have a Lemond Tete de Course, Santa Cruz Blur, Gary Fisher Sugar 1, Trek 5200 and they all fit well on this rack, and are very secure. The rack is well designed. It comes with a hitch lock, integrated cable lock, the rack swings away, and the head pivots to allow for full access to your bikes, and the cargo area. It has a "zip stick" which allows you to secure the bikes and prevent wobbling. Check out your local Thule dealer, they should have one. We've got two in stock and I'm located about 2 hours north of you.

David I have the same LR rack as mentioned above. If you plan on long hauls this isnt the rack for you. I had one on the back of my disco for half of a round the country trip. After about 6 weeks and 9000 miles it started to bend at the swing hinge. Granted it saw some hard use, washboard roads, forest roads for miles and miles on end.. etc. It got to the point where it was almost impossible to close as the bent hinge put the drop pin out of alingment. We ended up shipping the bikes home and running the remainder of the 6000 miles with an empty rack. The rubber on the top piece also scars the top tube with black rubber. it comes off but its a pita.. and the downtubes would often rub the fork of the other bike and scar the paint, as well as the fork crown. Im sure the rack was never designed to handle the kind of abuse it got, and for your uses it may perfect. thats just my experience with it. Around town and what not it gets the job done just fine.

David: I second Thule . I have a cannondale r400 and I have never had a problem mounting it on my Thule. Parts are easy to get and cheap (even after the car wash ate a few things like the end caps or the sweet spot cradle ). Very dependable/Very solid -I leave it on almost all the time.. It folds down for easy access to the back tailgate. I also bought the zip stick (anti sway bar) for when I carry more than one bike for stability.

Does anyone have anything similar to the Yakima Hitchfork? I think I am looking for something similar to this. Or even one that hold them in place with both wheels on. I looked on the thule site but did not come across anything similar..

gil thanks for the road report, thats the kind of info I love to get here on d-web.

Keep the comments coming...
