What are the pro's and cons of hand held CB's? I will only use it on the trails and in close proximity to other vehicles and don't really want to install one in the dash etc... Does anyone have any advice?

if you want handheld, buy a bunch of FRS/GMRS walkie-talkies. I have two Cobra handheld GPS units - they work better than UHF, but - they are bulky, eat the batteries like there's no tomorrow, and the rubber duck antenna they come with is a joke.
A small Cobra unit (not a handheld) is small and light enough to be strapped on behind the cubby box; signal-quality-wise, it is no worse than a full-blown SSB-enabled thing.

It all depends on what everyone else has. Handheld CB can certainly be helpful.

I use a handheld but you still need an external antenna if you want to get any reception beyond the truck in front and the truck in back.

Perry, I agree with you about not wanting to clutter up the dash. The only thing I want on the dash is the GPS. I don't like all the wires and other crap that gets in the way. As far as CB's go check this out:

This is what my brother and I use. Mount an antenna on you spare tire carrier with a quick disconnect and you'll never know it's there until you need it. Also it will transmit a hell of a lot better than a handheld. The hand helds have their place though. If you need to get out of your car to check something out you can carry it with you. I have both. They're both cheap.

i actually just got a the cobra 75 that steve suggested and it works pretty well. mounted the power supply under the drivers seat and the mic i routed through the center cubby, no muss, no fuss and out of harms way.
got it through amazon for about the same price as valco.

I have the Cobra 75 also. It works great, and takes up no space at all. I mounted the small power box under the seat too. I like this setup because I don't want my disco to look like a trucker's rig. When you don't need it, just unplug it and put it in the glove box. Nobody will even know you have a CB when they look inside your truck.
