Howdy Folks: Can anyone tell me the general top highway speed of a Series III 109 2.5 diesel with overdrive, but turbo? The seller says the 109 can cruise on the highway around 75-80mph, but gets their slowly (sounds like our '83 Volvo 242). I know the 109 is not the most comfy vehicle on the highway, but I spend a lot of time on the interstate (I live 22 yards from I-91). I am just skeptical of this vehicle being able to actually reach these speeds safely. The overdrive was supposedly added sometime in the '80's to the vehicle. Everything else about the Series III sounds great. Anyone have any experience with this set up? I've been looking for a Series 109 (IIA or III) for a while and would prefer a diesel. If I purchase the vehicle in the next few months my goal is to add a 300tdi within 2 years or so. Any info is appreciated. |

Well....... It may be possible to get a 2.5 up to that speed, but.... a) I'd expect it to be unpleasant in volume... it'd be really loud b) At that speed, it will be nerve-wracking... these things weren't planned for that kind of speed, and they don't handle like a sports-car. The times I had my SIII up to ~55 was more than enough... when I want to go fast, I take the Roo... c) Stopping.... from that speed, I don't even want to imagine it. Scary. A sound Series is "capable", it just the degree of comfort that you can live with..... IMHO, FWIW.... -L |

I drove my Lightweight all over the east, and from Cleveland to Madison, WI doing 65-70 the whole way (when traffic would allow) Bunch of winps ;-) Mine was a petrol at the time (have since converted it to 2.25 diesel) but no OD. Call Al at DAP, ask him, he has a years of experience with all manner of Series and various engine conversions. He even used to sell turbo kits for the 2.25, maybe still does. |
