I got some carb problems. I just rebuilt my carb on my siia truck and now it is running rich, really rich. I took it to a buddy of mine who is a talented mechanic and he has taken the carb apart to check my work(i replaced gaskets) and he says he cannot see anything wrong with it. He told me that he has tried 4 times to fix it and he is about to give up.

Any ideas why it is spewing fuel?

What carburetor do you have ? What did your "rebuild" entail? If its spewing fuel may be an issue in the needle valve or float.

My 2 cents

Get a rochester

If its a zenith it could be warped (exsparated by you taking it apart) and that could be the issue.

More details and the fault should be obvious. was it ok before? Why did you rebuild?

The carb is a Zenith. I put in new gaskets and a float. The needle vavle did have a grove in it but since it wasn't running rich before I didn't replace it. I also did sand down the warped sections even though it was not leaking fuel.

What is the story on the rochester carb? pros and cons and where can I get one?

Thomas ,
Did you use a heavy piece of flat glass when mating the Zenith halves? I had to do it twice b/4 it would seal correctly . As for the rochester there are pros and cons to the switch. Have a look at Bayou Jim's site about using a rochester conversion. www.bayourovers.com

We looked at the new connection pretty darn close and man there wasn't any fuel leaking anywhere on that. The glass was about 1/4 or less.

There is a redundant hole on zeniths that if unplugged (ie by a new gasket) could also be the issue.

Any single barrel rochester will work, most use the B model but I have the M and like the power. Junkyard or parts store will yeild one. Rebuild kits are $10.

That sucks.

See bayou Jim's site for the rochester info. If you want to be saddled with a used zenith I think I know where to find one. If you want an M rather than a B rochester I can get the part # off Noah's (my 88) carb.

RT40?

BTW, does the unleaded conversion require a new head?

There was some info on it on the roversnorth BBS a while back. The search function is down for the moment though. I have heard it mentioned several times. A phone call to Roversnorth or BP should allow you to arrive at the correct answer.

or . . .

GET A ROCHESTER!

Michael,

Not an entire new head, but it needs new valves and guides, etc...

FWIW...

After talking with some guys they said that the zenith was far simpler than the weber and the trade offs were negligible? I almost went with a weber. The Rochester set up looked too complicated for me. My skills are on the low end so I have to go the easy route for right now.
