My series IIa shifts fine all the way up to fourth but coming down from third to second is difficult to impossible. any ideas why?

Series 2a does not have a synchro 2nd, You should be double clutching from 1st to 2nd. 3rd to 2nd shouldn't be too bad but 2nd to 1st near impossible. The 2nd to 3rd synchro is probably getting a little worn.

David-It is the shift from 3rd to second that is tough and I hate to keep grinding gears. Do you still think that it is the Synchro getting worn?

You just have to learn to drive it. There is no synchro on second.

Match revs and pray. Eventually you will get it. I can even do 2nd to first but I really have to think about it.

I get it sometimes but that grinding sound kills me. So what you are saying is that this is not abnormal?

Double clutch! Sometimes I also have to run the shifter through 4th and 3rd before dropping it into 2nd. As Ron said, you must also learn to match the rpms very closely to the gear you want to shift into. Practice makes perfect. Unless you've double clutched and have the rpms just right, it will make a terrible racket.

this ••••• is not a hot rod. honstly i cant even picture down shifting from 3rd to 2nd with out getting a grind. i mean the gearing is so low do you even have to down shift. the truck should be stopped or nearlly stoped when you do shift into 2nd. but like said there is no syncro on first nor second. so from 3rd back to 2nd no syncro so grind.

I think you may have solved my overdrive problem. I think I am permamantly engaged. I thought that it was inop.

The reason I wanted to downshift was that as I approached a turn 3rd gear was too high and made acceleration out of the turn sluggish hence the desire to go into 2nd but it would be really bad if the overdrive was engaged so this leads me to believe that my overdrive is in the on position.

Thanks

With the non syncro 2nd gear in a IIA box, you need to double clutch both on the upshift and the downshift. There is no way around this unless the vehicle is barely rolling. Clashing gears can chip! Like others said, practice makes perfect. Maybe read up on a written description about the process also...
