Before I tear into things I was wondering if there is a trick to engaging the 4wd(yellow knob). I tried it driving, in reverse in nuetral and then tried it with in low. It keeps popping up. |

spring sming there is water in there ull have to dis assemble where the front drive shaft attaches. remove the flange, pulling everthing apart. remove the alloy caseing and you will find that it is probably rusted |

There is no trick to it. When in high range, depress yellow knob to engage Hi4. To release Hi4, shift to low ( yellow knob should pop up ) then shift back to high. Why Hi4 is not latching is beyond me though. Unless someone has replaced the spring with a much higher rated one, you may need to look internal. Bruce. |

there is water in the transfer box and all internals are rusted. first things first, drain the gear oil from it. check if ther is any water there if there is then this is what to do. remove front drive shaft. undo the nuts holding alloy casing in place, remove. here is where the the problem is. when the yellow nob is pushed down watch what happens. try to picture what is taking place interinally. i bet there is corrosion here. has the truck been sitting for a while. offroad lately. anyway when was the gear lube last changed. what year is this truck. gear lube should be replaced every 60,000 km. you see most people negelect their rovers never mantaing any thing. let them sit in the feild for years. then sell them to some one else. there is no trick to engage four wheel drive. yellow nob pushes down 4 hi. red nob all the way back 4 low. also never use your truck in low box with the front hubs not engaged. if you have free wheeling hubs engage them when low is to be used. engage them at least once a month. this will ensure proper lubrication to your racio bushings. pick your self up a workshpop manual and follow the scheduled mantence faithfully. but first do as i say and remove the tbox gear lube checking for water. remove alloy casing inspect clean and lubricate internal linkages. i speak on experience as this exact problem has happened to us on more than one rover |

I had a similar problem and it was due to an internal drift (roll?) pin coming out of position and fouling the 4wd linkage. I also could not pull the high/low lever back to low. Anyway, I had to remove the big cast aluminum transfer box extension cover to repair. One thing you should first do (after removing the RH floorboard) is to remove the formed sheetmetal thing that covers the ends of the 4wd shift rods. Squirt wd40 and see if things free up. It's a chance.... Joe Mulqueen '67 SIIA 109 SW |

OK-New news on this. I was told by my shop guys that the 4wd drive engages when the red lever is pulled into LOW. This points to a linkage control problem. This is an FYI |
