Dear Gents and Ladies, I have the opportunity to acquire an 84 130 Defender, that has a 4.2 liter Perkins Diesel (with 65,000 miles on the engine, and a 150,000 miles on the gearbox) married to a LT 95 gearbox. Can you please advise me, as to areas of concern that i should look at when viewing the vehicle, so that I can make an informed decision as to the condition of the truck. My intention for the truck is to slowly fix up a few things and drive it from Barrow, Alaska down the Pan American Highway to the bottom of Argentina. From the pictures, that i have been sent, the truck looks in good condition, my main concern is the mechanics. Is the Perkins married to the LT 95 gearbox a good marriage? Is anyone familair with the relaibility of the 4.2 Perkins, as well as the LT 95 gearbox. The gearbox also has an overdrive capacity. Thank you in advance for taking the time to provide any advice. Regards, Arman. |

What is the exact perkins engine in it? This matters a lot. Also CHECK THE FRAME. They rust and even if it is only minor it can lead to fractures under extreme conditions. Gearbox you need to check for slop. Also the overdrive adds to the issue. If it is excessive you may have issues (likely not though). If you are in the US you cannot import the vehicle, if you are canadian you can of course buy it and drive it anywhere (including the US). Ron |

Ron, Thank you for your response. To answer your question the Perkins Diesel is the 4236 3.9 liter engine. Excuse my ignorance but could you please explain "slop" regarding the transmission. I am up in Canada, so purchasing and registering the vehicle will not be an issue. I will have to go and physically inspect the vehicle and will be on the look out for rust on both body panels, and the chassis. If the LT 95 has no "slop" issues do they have a good reliability record. Again, I am grateful for any input you can provide. Regards, Arman |

The LT95 is an integral gearbox/transfer case and the seals between tend to die. It is a good idea to add a pipe from filler plug to filler plug to help level out the transmission oils and ensure one doesn't run dry. The overdrive would be a fairey unit and not all that strong. A suggestion is to only use when in 4th gear otherwise you might crack its case. (a friend recently did this and that was only with an isuzu 3.6l diesel engine) John D |

LT95s tend to wear out and get sloppy making driving them less than fun. If it is tight then it is fine and even if it is loose it probably will be fine but less pleasant to drive (well you have a perkins diesel so pleasant is relative). The OD just make sure you get the gear that it replaces in case it breaks in route. I am not familiar with that diesel. Is it turbo? Do a bit of research on it before you buy. The mazda one is not bad but I think you have an earlier model. Finally, an 84 130 goes for about 5000-7000 canadian in the UK. Why not go over and buy one for yourself and import it? Food for thought. If it is a good truck and what you want then go for it. Ron |

Ron, Funnily enough, i was thinking the same thing, regarding research a solid 130 in the UK, and then having them drop a 300 TDI in it, since it is comparably cheaper than doing it here or the USA. Thanks guys for all your input. Cheers, Arman |

The Perkins 4-236 engines are rugged engines. At least the one's I've seen. Very similar to the 4-208, which I have). They are loud though, at tleast the older one's. Be sure to drive it first. |

As far as the LT-95 goes, I think you have some good answers there. I am in the process of "be-friending" one. There is an LT-95 on my rangie, and I would say that it has slop. It is rather sticky going into and out of 2nd gear, i am trying to decide if it is the syncro mesh or just how the trans is in that model. The gearing is rather pleasent though, it has a great low box and the crawl ratio, although i don't know exactly what it is, is fantastic. I think I like it, but I'm not sure yet. I'd be careful with it though. |
