I've got a line on a 1963 series II in great shape (for the age). Buddy wants $3,000 canadian for it. Comes with lots of parts, has all the pieces (no winch though) and the frame is decent. Haven't had a great look at the frame but he said there was a major oil leak (go figure) and the oil cover a good part of the chassis so it didn't rust.

This is all new ground to me so can someone tell me what questions I should be asking and what to look out for.

Check the frame and bulkhead. do the brakes work?

If it will pass an inspection 3000C is not bad at all.

don't know about the bulkhead or brakes as of yet.
Are brakes pretty pricy? Also I should mention that I am looking to restore this car somewhat (perhaps for resale) more than I'm looking for a cheap means of transportation. That being said, where abouts should i put the cap on how much money to invest in this. Up here they sell for close to 10k in great shape.

Depends. 88"'s are going for anywhere from $4k to $10K US here in California. Depending on the condition and how much you have to spend, restoring a Series may not be the way to riches. Lots of man hours if you're DIY. Lots of labor costs if you're contracting out work.

As they say, a Series truck will take twice as long as you think to rebuild and will cost twice as much as you budget.

It's never easy.

Looks fairly straight and unmolested. Rust is coming through the painted-over crossmember; either patchwork, or if it is worse than it looks, replacing the rear crossmember, are options.

Drive it. If it's sound... runs fairly smooth, doesn't jump out of gear, shifts well, can run at speed w/o too much effort (for a Series, that is!), no violent shimmies, brakes are effective... it'd well be worth it, oil leak included.... (I'd guess mayhaps the rear main seal... or, perhaps, the valve cover...)...

Drive it and see what you think of how it runs and drives.....

I notice it has an SU Carb, looks like an ACR kit, and check out the size of that heater blower! I would wonder why the floors are out, Transmission trouble? Still all in all for 3K Canadian that looks like a pretty nice truck
