I presently own a D1. I use it mostly onroad, but alot of offroad. I live in Alberta. There is a couple of old series LDs for sale. The question that I have, is it easy to modify these things. I currently have cheap access to a Chev 305 and a Chev 350 engine. Also I can get Dana 44s for cheap. I would like to lift one and cut the fenders alot. I want to get at least a 35 bogger on there, if at all possibe. Along with some lockers. My buddy has a TJ lifted 6 inches with lockers and boggers, spring mud is coming and I need to beat him. Especially with a LAND ROVER, with he thinks is not possible. And feedback or help would be great.
Thanks
Sean

a) the beauty of Series Rovers is that, unmodded, you could, with skill, still beat him anyway, lol....

b)yes, they're easy to modify. The stock transmission can't a lot more hp that it already has, it'll only handle about 120hp (stock is ~80hp). If you're planning anything over 120hp (which about any other engine) you'll need a different transmission.

I've not seen Chevys used myself; I've seen Rover V8s put into Series, and lots of others (Holden, Isuzu, Robert Davis', etc.) But, I know of one that you may want to talk to... Check out Art Bitterman's Guns-n-Rovers board, check out Quietcanyon's Rover....

The Series rover is very easy to modify. Depending on what model you get (Series 2, 2A, 3) your ability to modify it will be different. My Series 3 is very easy to modify and work on.

I think you should find one that is in good shape (I bought a non-runner and it was no fun...) and drive it for a while. Once you drive it and understand what the vehicle needs, then you can make the modification

FWIW, check out this website:

I know that Landy uses a Ford 302 V8 with a Borg T-18 transmission, but it is kinda the same idea.

Have fun with it!!

Max,
Very nice and informative link. The crawl ratio with the T-18 is really sweet.
