I would appreciate some input here. Just putting the finishing touchs on my '68 Ser IIA 88". Took her all the way down to the frame, all new brakes, new parabolic springs and shocks, sandblasted and used POR15 on the frame and bulkhead, new wiring harness...you get the picture. But here is the problem, when running at high (OK, high for the 2.25 engine :-) ) rpm's and letting off the gas quickly, I get a terrible whurring sound. Everything seems OK otherwise and it only happens in 3rd or 4th gear under the described circumstances. Any ideas?

I'm getting the exact same thing. After driving around a little today, I'm guessing one of the rear u-joints.

Is the sound you're hearing almost like a rumbling rattle?

New u-joints through out. And no the sound is best described as a loud whurring.

Hmmm. Maybe it's not the same then. I'm taking the truck up on lifts today to see if we can isolate it. It almost sounds like the driveshaft is rotating, and scraping some lighter metal.

I'll let you know what we find.

Had it up on the lift today and we checked the rear u-joints, okay there. Rear diff seemed okay, maybe the backlash just a little off. No deforming of the drive shaft as load increases....so.....moved up to the tcase. Seems to be a lot of play when turning the ds by hand, about an inch. We're not sure if this is right or not. Anyway, the tcase is the leading culprit at this point.

Paul, does the whurring have texture or is it more like a smooth howl? I too have RM parabolics, I wonder if the pinion angle is changed enough so that it is amplifying something that has been there all along.?

Fellas,
I had the same thing happen after I put Rocky Mts. on my 72 SWB (Rita.) What happened was that the rear drive shaft was at a new angle (new springs vs. old springs) and the noise was coming from there. I did new u-joints front/rear, rebuilt the rear diff. all with no remedy. Then I got the idea to shim the rear axle to get the drive line angle back closer to what it was before. Now it works like a charm.
I've had Rita off-road 25+ times since then (rocks, mud, trails etc.) all with no problems. I just wish I'd have tried the .02 cent shim before all of that other stuff.

Hey Michael, that sounds like the first thing to try. The prev owner (I've only had the truck 3 days) did a bunch of stuff too and said that it all started shorted after the RMs went on.

Exactly how did you shim the axle?

You can buy commerically available shims in varing degrees of thickness.

That sounds like great news, but can you explain the process for me. I'm not a gearhead. Rebuilding this Rover is my first attempt at anything like this. I love it, but am still learning....thanks

Got mine figured out...turns out the rear prop shaft had two problems: 1) it was installed backwards (figured this out from the manual) and 2) it was somehow put together with the end caps 90 degrees out of phase. Unreal. Thanks to Troy at Tom Woods for getting me up under the truck one more time.
