Is there a special tool to remove this plug? My plug is a slot about 3mm wide and 13mm long.

Nevermind, improvised with a punch...I guess I still have a question as to if there's a tool or not.

I didn't think so, but....

In the Green Bible, under the Maintenance section, under Front differential oil changes, the last sentence says:

The drain plug has a slotted head and can be removed with the aid of the single-ended spanner in the tool kit.

In the last section of the manual, in the Service Tools section, I couldn't tell which one it was referring to, I'm guessing that it's not included here, only special tools, and not regular tools from the tool-kit.

FWIW....

Use the back of a 9/16ths or 1/2in open end wrench.

Simple really, but no one would figure it out on their own.

THAT'S what I did, Mike. I couldn't remember. What Ron described, plus a little love from my BFH, and it worked just fine.

I'll get slammed for this, but I bought a tool for this job from Rovers North once apon a time for $15 or so. Simple and it has been used many, many times. I also have a nifty tool from the UK for using a ratchet to remove drive shaft bolts...

I like having the right tool for the job, but there are cheaper, much cheaper ways of doing the same thing.

The long answer is there is a tool at RN for draining the diff housing.

Yep. Well, nothing like a new truck to give you an opportunity to "upgrade" your tools. I will say that now that I've been up and down and all around this truck over the past week, I can see that there really aren't any special tools you need to take care of things.

There are some that are nice to have, tho'.... it's nice to have a genuine hub socket, instead of using channel-locks. It's nice to have the castle-looking main shaft nut tool. A good torque wrench is nice to have. But most especially, a good 5lb hammer. :-)
