Old "Fuel Smell" thread

This is an 8:1 turner engine with fancy valves but I don't know what cam it has, I'm guessing the 2.5 because this engine really pulls.

I inherited Matt's problem when I bought the rig, but I think I fixed it. Did an ignition tune-up, plugs, cap, rotor, leads and got the timing set by ear, advanced somewhat.

Next, I followed the instructions here: http://www.weber-carburetors.com/Weber/adjust.htm to set the carb. I was able to crank down on the mixture to within 1.75 turns from the bottom and she's idling now at about 8-900, very smooth, no gas smell coming from the engine bay.

Now that I'm all proud and happy, I was going to replace the inline fuel filter. Guess what, there are two of them! Also, I've discovered there two fuel pumps: one at the tank and the standard mechanical version on the block.

I don't see any reason for two fuel filters...unless they're being used to restrict pressure because of problems with fuel dumping in the carb??!!

I'm gonna replace the two fuel filters with a single unit and new fuel line and see what happens.
