a chevy 250 straight six should fit in there. you will need a scotty's adapter plate to mate it to the bellhousing. some welding to relocate the engine mounts and away you go. |

I would personally go with one of Robert Davis' engines.... he's located on the Virginia coast I think, and frequents the RN BBS...... -L

keep it stock dont molest a series with some garbage. There are plenty of good resources for motors. look at www.roversdownsouth.com just my .02$ |

Yeah, you'd hate to go to all the trouble and have a motor in there that would be reliable and last more than 100K miles. It just wouldnt be right. Stick with the original. -Regards -Ike Goss |

i highly think chevy straight six's are garbage... but yes agreed keep it original.... drive slow and remember to wave at others... diesel of coarse are nice.... good bye as soon i will die.... |

Paul, Diesels arent cost effective - I never recommend them, I just drive them. Mickey - Youre sorely mistaken. The chevy 6 is hard to kill and has alot more guts than any rover motor. Problem is the rover drivetrain is not up to handling the power from the chevy. -Regards -Ike Goss |

Ike is right, the Chevy 6 will eventually damage the Rover gearbox leading to an early rebuild. A friend of mine has the 250 conversion. They last about 24K miles...then rebuild. Its a S3 box. You'd want a more modern gearbox than the '30's vintage design. Oh yeah, then there's the cooling problem.(s) Fab your own engine mounts...can you weld? Clearance problems between the oil pan and front diff. You need longer bump stops so the diff. won't pound a hole in the pan. Ask how I know. So much for the already limited axel articulation. Then if you don't change the 4.7 diff.'s, the Chevy will rev. higher than it should and your milage will still suck. Even with an overdrive and 16" tires. FORGET THE 250 CHEV If you want a good engine match with no frame/body mod., call Robert Davis. His engine will beat the crap out of any 2.25 lump. No matter how modified. Uses stock radiator, can use a Rover 4-speed. No mounts to fab. I've got one of Robert's "early" designs. His newer ones are even better. I have the 4.7 diff.d, but an Ashcroft hi-range transfer case. 2800 rpm at 70 mph+. with power to spare. |
