I have a 1999 Series II. 64,000 miles. I was driving to the beach for a vacation last week and a "chirping" noise starting coming from under the rover. It is not the brakes. Starts when I accelerate and continues to get get louder and quicker as I speed up. Took it to a local shop and they said they can't fix it. They think it is the transmission. shifts seem fine. I think its the drive shaft or a gearbox. Help! just put a new air compressor on the car for $1000. There are no local dealers in our area btw. Help! Thanks, Aubrey |

It sounds like a dry UJ on the propshaft to me. They need to be kept well greased or they go dry, get hot and fail (with a bang) I've had this on my Series III and my disco, as the little grease nipples are quite easy to damage. It shoud stop if you get a good wadge of grease in them, but if the UJ is too far gone, theyr're cheap and quite easy to replace. |
