I know I have heard it elsewhere but my zenith(new) carb is running rich as all get out and I can't figure out why. The micture screw is in all the way. I estimated this week that I am maybe getting 5 miles to the gallon or less. I thought I had a hole in my tank it was that bad.

Sounds like the dreaded Zenith Warp!

Not something from Star Trek, but the castings for the carb are sometimes not annealed correctly and will warp around the float chamber allowing gas to escape down the intake.

Fix is to flat the two halves on some glass with fine emery cloth and anneal in the oven. Write-ups on the net-don't have them bookmarked to give to you-I've always run SOlex's and Weber's.

Do the new ones warp too? I bought a new zenith becuase my old zenith was warped and sanding didn't work on it. I hate to think that zenith never corrected the problem. I hope this isn't the case.

I also seem to remember something about having to plug a hole on a new zenith. I am not totally sure about this but do remember some documentation on the web somewheres. I will try and find it.

It seemed strange to me that a brand new carb would need work straight away.

I tried that with the old carb-you think that this carb will need that hole plugged. I guess that would be typical british.
