My project is coming along quite nicely. Yesterday I took out the engine and transmission, and I'm down to pretty much just a rolling chasis except for the bulkhead.

I've been posting pictures of the progress here:

I'm trying to take out the steering components so that I can remove the bulkhead. Problem is I can't get off what the Haynes manual refers to as the drop arm. It says to use Leyland Special Part Number 600000 which I'm assuming is no longer available. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about:

Any ideas on how to get it off?

Thanks, and I'm sure I'll have more questions soon!
Alex

A gear-puller! Something like a battery-cable remover, or a steering wheel puller, etc. etc.... that's all the original tool is, a puller...

Anything that will push on the center while pulling on the sides should do the trick.

Have to say, you're progressing rather nicely... I'd strongly recommend locating a green bible to accompany the Haynes....

I have a steering wheel puller with two arms that come out, and a set of gear pullers. The problem with the steering wheel puller is that it takes two bolts through it, which you are supposed to thread into something, so that won't really work here. I tried using the gear puller, and it wouldn't budge, so I doused it in penetrating oil, and will try again in a few minutes.

From the illustration, it looked like the special puller fit over the too little "ears" on the drop arm. Since my puller has 3 arms, I positioned them at the base of the drop arm. Do you think that makes any difference?

I realized last night that one might be useful :-) But the only ones I could find were on ebay, so I'm bidding now.

Don't think that'd matter, about the 3rd arm.

I have a little battery terminal cable puller that has just two arms, I would think that it would work nicely.

With that said, though, I don't recall needing such when I pulled mine..... I think I used a well-positioned lever on the arm, adjacent to the shaft, to get it to slide off of there.

I had to go rent a gear puller.

I've decided that the set of gear pullers I have are garbage, as they've never worked for me. So, I got a new one and it popped right off. Now I'm down to just a rolling chasis! It really is great having a month off from school, I'm dreading going back next week.

Ron, I was taking it off so that I can get the steering box off, and get the bulkhead out.

Which brings me to my next point. I'm switching over to a galvanised chasis, but the frame I have is actually not in bad shape. I've been whacking at the outriggers and they haven't budged. It has a realatively new rear cross member, but it doesn't look like it was welded on all that well. And, there is a patch on the rear part of the frame. I remember someone was looking for a decent used frame awhile back, but do you think based on my limited description mine is worth anything? Even if it's not much it would be money, and it would save me having to pay someone to cart it away.

Let me know what you think, and I may put it up on Ebay just to see if anyone is looking.

Ya, you did not need to take that off.

You should have just taken off the ball joint on there. make sure to get it back on exactly how it was the first place.

You can get the frame taken away for free as it is worth about $20 in scrap metal.
