Yesterday I went to drive my '65 IIA, only to find that the rear axle is not driving. I put the truck in Low Range,or 4WD High range and the front Axle drives. I looked and the rear propshaft is turning when the truck is in gear, but nothing is transferred to the wheels. The strange thing is I drove it home in 2WD last time with no problems. It has simply been sitting in the driveway for a week or two. Also there is no grinding or clanking like with a broken axle or diff. Is there a simple thing I have missed or do I need to take apart the the rear diff?

Hey Ted,

It sounds like a broken rear halfshaft. Usually the longer side (the left one) breaks before the shorter side (the right one). I would pull the left one first and see if it has broken at the diff. If not, pull the other side and take a look. If they both look okay then you will have to pull te diff to have a look see.

Yes, it is a broken half-shaft. I took your advice and checked the longer side first. So, of course it is the shorter one. Now my question is whether just to replace the stock one or upgrade to the GBR heavy duty ones.

Ted: kinda depends on your long term plans for the truck: if you want to take it on the trails asap, the upgrade is a great idea, maybe with a lsd or locker in there as well. On the other hand, if you're going to be puttin' around town while you fix it up, stock axles may be fine. If you go this route, use LR axles as they tend to break cleaner.

I have Bill's HD 10 splines for now: someday, lockers, 24 splines..... it never ends.
