Since I can't afford a real Series truck just yet, I'm building a 1/24 model of a SIII to satisfy my yearning. Problem is, I don't know what the proper factory colors and options were. Where can I find this info along with color samples so I can make my decisions? It's an 88" Station Wagon.

Marine Blue (light blue), Pastel Green (close to sage green, real light), Poppy Red (darker than pure red), Limestone (creamy-white color), Bronze Green (darker, kinda like a rich British Racing green, more luster than olive drab), Sand (medium tan). Those are the main colors. Also, a color you might be interested in is British Leyland Sandglow, which is the CT color, a creamy yellow.

A site I use as reference a lot is http://www.eastcoastrover.com/INFOSeriesIIIUSA.html. Also, check http://www.seriesrover.com/, another good site. And, a site that all Series Rover owners should visit is http://www.geocities.com/bayourovers/.

That should be a start for ya. Email me if you have questions about my own SIII, or options, etc. etc.....

Then, once you are ready for a real Series Rover, start at http://www.thatchedroofgarage.com/

Good luck!

Leslie,
My 77'MGB is Sandglow. A girl back in HS called it baby sh.t yellow. I didn't know what she meant until 2 yrs ago. But the color on a vehicle can be dirty up close but show well from afar.
I like the light green on Series trucks.

Leslie, thanks for the info. Were all of the interiors black? That seems to be the only color I've seen.

The interior should be body colored in my experience.

The interior metal parts (seat box, floorboard, etc.) are body-colored. The SIII has the "plastic" dash, which is black. Earlier SIIa rovers had gray "elephant-hide" vinyl seats, while the later ones and the SIII Rovers had black vinyl seats.

Headliner in hard-tops is a speckled off-whitish color.

Soft-tops can be tan (what we call khaki), a bright "olive drab" green (what the Brits call khaki, but it's not khaki to my eye, and not a particularly great color, IMO), a medium blue (IMHO, again a nasty color), or a darker military olive drab (what we would call olive drab, an okay color).

Also, a deluxe SIII had some bumper-panels, which were also black. These were long vinyl bits that helped make the rear tub, around the windows, a bit less harsh if you were bumping around back there.

Also, most rovers have a cover over the tranny tunnel which is black, and black floormats in the front and in the rear tub. The doorpanel interiors are black, too.

Great. Thanks for all the info. I'll probably go with the light green color, with elephant hide seats.

Galvanized bumpers front and rear, rear grab handles, undersides of side and rear steps, windscreen frame, spare tire carrier on bonnet and rear door (if applicable) and all cappings on tub and doors retain the galvanised "silver" look and in real life, should not be painted if at all possible.
Is your 1/24 hard or soft top? Full rear door or pickup style? SWB = 88" or LWB = 109". RHD or left hand drive?
4WD engage lever (next to main gear shift)is yellow and the transfer case lever is red. Bet that think is going to look sweet. Main gearshift and overdrive knob (if fitted) are black. :).

Jude, I've got a way to replicate the galvanized finish. Will use Metalizer Aluminum and then coat w/ dullcote. This gives it a tarnished, somewhat mottled look and looks just like a galvanized peice. Found this out by mistake one time building a vintage Indy car. Would it look bad to "galvanize" the bulkhead as well? It's an 88" LHD hardtop with single rear door and bonnet mounted spare. I also dug up a scale Warn 8274 for the front and will use some 1/35 scale military lugged tires since I bought the kit at a swap meet w/o tires and wheels for $1.00. They are perfect for 1/24 scale vehicles.

It's not that it would look "bad", just not spec...

But, real Series Rovers have been SO customized... there are plenty out there that really have galvanized bulkheads now, that its quite possible that whatever you do on the model has been done for real.

Is the hard-top a trop-top, or just a standard roof? IMHO, the Warn 8274 is the best winch for a Series, it just looks right, as well as being functional.... capstans also look right, but they're not very useful for recovery, only for stationary pulling (like pulling stumps, etc.).

I'm eager to see this critter.... where'd you find the base model? I wouldn't mind adding a regular Series to go with my Pinkie... lol...

Leslie, it's a standard hard-top with the alpine windows. It's a Monogram kit issued in the late 70's I think. I bought it at a swap meet. Had no box, instructions, decals, or tires and wheels, but everything else was still on the trees. I paid $1.00 for it. This past weekend I saw the same kit factory sealed sell for $40! I have the kit # at home and will post it for you if needed. I'm working on trying to get an ESCI Camel Trophey Range Rover kit right now. We'll see how that goes. I'm a scale snob, so I only build 1/24-1/25 stuff.

In that case, any thoughts on the Pinkie I did??

It was the first model I have dones since I was 10 or so... and it was definitely the first one that I actually took some time to do it right.

I thought it looked great. I especially liked the weathering job you did. ESCI also makes a 109" military version w/ weapons, as well as a 109" civilian wagon, again in 1/24 scale. I'm trying to locate those as well. Let me know if you're looking for a certain kit. I've been building on and off since I was a kid. Just recently sold about 100 kits to make room for baby stuff! I actaully bought the SIII kit years ago before I even owned Winston simply 'cause I've always likes Landies, and 4X4's in general.

Thanks! I just looked out the window at my Series a lot, trying to get the bits to look "real", like the yellow and red knobs, the paint wear, etc...

I wouldn't mind an 88", but not for $40! lol If I run across another Pinkie, I might get it and do it all again, and start a little fleet... lol....

I'll keep my eyes open for you for an 88". Don't worry, I'm not into expensive kits anymore, so I won't get it if it's not cheap.

Pretty much anything in 1/24-1/25 scale that has decent detail. Range Rovers are probably my smallest interest. Thanks.

Greg,

You can order small spray paint cans of the correct LR paint from roversnorth, including pastel green.

Sorry Ron, didn't see your message yesterday. Thanks for the paint can info. I appreciate everyone's input.

P.S.-I was bidding on a Camel Trophy Rangie kit on eBay, but it has gotten very pricey. I'm a CB at heart!
