Mike,

just a week or so ago I asked a question on the guns and rovers BBS about if I should keep my 65 IIA or sell it and buy my wife's Disco from her.

If you go to the that BBS http://pub49.ezboard.com/bgunsandrovers you can read the entire links, but the jist of it is... a Series is way cooler (not so many of them on the road), a Series is easier to fix (fuel or spark), a Series will in time appreciate in value, and a couple of years down the road you can buy Discos cheap.

Series trucks get in your blood. They may not have all the appointments that a Disco does, but in a way they have more soul.

A Series truck is hot in the summer, cold in the winter. It rattles and whines, it's rough on the road (without parabolics - so I hear) and it will bounce you to death off-road. I wouldn't and didn't trade it for a Disco.

Good Luck and Have Some Fun!

I had the problem that the wife wouldn't let me mod the Disco since I was paying so much for it. And, paying for the Disco was keeping me from doing anything on my Series Rover. So, I traded the Disco off, got a (cool) commuter, and now she'll let me rebuild my 88"....

Don't get me wrong, I loved my Disco, and wanted to really turn it into a trail truck, but it was still SO nice, and pricy, that she'd kill me if I scratched it beyond the paint's brush-striping that it was already getting.... I've got plans for my next Disco already, it's just going to take a bit before I get there..... 'til then, I'm tinkering on the Series....

FWIW...

If the itch is there, ya gotta scratch it. Or else it will gnaw at you day and night.

You'll find yourself spending hours, no, days drooling on lrx.com and seriesrover.com

100 miles a day in a series truck!

You need a series truck AND a honda :)

Mike,

When I got my series rover, the womenfolk of the house actually liked it. They liked it a lot. In fact a lot of the girls at school like the truck too. I don't know if everyone has this same luck, but you just might be worrying about nothing (hopefully). I guess everyone (except us b/c we go 4 wheeling :)) see it as a fashion statement or a Defender look-alike.

As for driving 100 miles a day, keep the disco ;). I'll tell ya what, if your significant other won't let you get a series, tell her she will get the disco, and you can have your series and some other good commuter.

My .03 cents.

she wont give up her converitable, honestly, i dont know, is a well running series not up to a 100 miles a day, five day a week drive or is it just the human factor. i have a choice of all interstate or leaving early and taking backroads and my new boss lives nearby so i would be commuting on some days in a comapny truck. i hate to be a pset just really struggling with the thought of buying a series.

I love Series Rovers, but, it's not a commuter, not for that kind of distance.

Not that the Series couldn't do a 100 miles a day, if kept up in good condition, and you know how to work on it. There'd be times that you would probably have to fix it in-route to get there. But, once you got there, you'd know that you just did 50 miles in a Series. It'd be okay the first several times, because of the excitement. Then, the novelty will start to wear off. Some other people seeing you and waving will make some days seem better than others, but, it'll get old.

I second Ron's idea.... get a Series, and also get an econo-box for the daily grind. That way, when you need to go get parts for the Series, you've got something that runs that'll get you there.

IMHO, FWIW....

Good!

Just be warned driving 100 miles a day in a series takes a REAL man.

60 miles a day in a disco is hard. I couln't imagine it in a Series.

I drive my IIA daily. It's my only truck as my wife takes the Disco to work. 50 miles each way is too much for a lot of reasons, especially if you have a family.

A) 50 miles in a Series takes a lot longer then 50 miles in a Disco. Try it a few times and you'll see. Gearing, the brake system, the engine, and basic safety pretty much keep you at 55MPH top speed. Most folks are used to 65~75MPH. 55MPH is A LOT slower once you start doing it every day.

B) 50 miles each way every day will turn into more then a few hours or work each weekend to keep the truck up to snuff. Yes, your Series can do the job, but it will require a lot of man hours to keep it that way. Is the wife going to be happy with you at work 5 days a week and up to your elbows in the engine bay every weekend?

C) Fuel economy on a Series is comparable to a Disco (except that you get to buy regular versus hi-test). You'll be filling up every day unless you're going to carry jerry cans or get a 2nd gas tank. Your range will only be about 150 miles.

Reality is that the truck was not built and was not designed for constant highway usage at todays speeds and traffic conditions. It's capable of doing it, but why subject the truck and yourself to that?

Get the IIA and get a cheap econo box for your commute. If you're driving that many miles, just keep buying junkers and toss them when the crap out.

I love my IIA and love driving it. Luckily, most of my commutes are 5~8 miles each way. The long highway trips are usually to fun destinations where the drive is part of the journey. If I were in you're shoes, I would be scouring the auto trader for a cheap honda/toyota runabout.

Just my $0.02

jeff, dude your ruining my high! no, really thanks for the advice, it does make sense! at this point, when the money is in my hand i will hand to my wife and think real hard before i buy. my trip is approx 50 miles but i can take an alternate route which is a few miles shorter but is all secondary road. i have trekked these distances before to get to a job site, in fact i used to travel from fairborn, ohio to cincinnati on an old kawasaki H2 talk about beating the crap out of you. i will proberly go with the series because my new boss lives 5 miles down the road, he and i will be commuting alot in a company truck anyways. but again thanks for the advice it is much appericated.

Not trying to piss in your cheerios. Just being realistic. These aren't drive 'em and forget 'em trucks. At best, it's going to be a 30 year old and well used truck by the time you take ownership. It's also 1948 technology based on even older designs.

Get it, enjoy it, use it. I'm just saying don't try to make it something it's not.

Mike, buy a toy or a hindoo for the commute
if ya wanna drive the daily distance.
my best adv is to ride with the boss,
suck up, buy donuts & coffee for the ride,
let the B-man buy lunch.
save the $ that would be spent on a 2nd car
& get a series to do the 5mi trek.
thats close enuff to be picked up
if the S lets ya down!
my 2p

91 yota 350k mi 70mi per day.
