I recently aquired a 1973 88" 2.25 petrol w/o overdrive. It hasn't been started in over a year and want to know if there are any maintenance precautions that I should take before starting/driving it.

OH you don't want that just send it my way:)
I would change all of the oils and fluids. Remove any gas that is left(everywhere). Plugs check your belts and your battery. Filters
I would do a complete service on to just be safe.

Congratulations on your new purchase.
At a minimum change all fluids and check operation of brakes and clutch. Check condition of the ball joints (6).
Remove the spark plugs and squirt a tablespoon of 10W30 or Marvel Mystery oil in each cylinder. Hand crank the engine over several time or turn it over with the key.
Check the points.
Drain the gas from the tank and note if any rust particles come out, if so you've got some cleaning to do. Install a new a fuel filter before the carb.
It is possible that the clutch might be stuck/rusted to the flywheel even if you can shift through the gears. If so post back.
Let her rip.
Good luck

If it was running, and was just parked, it should be easy enough to start. Mine had sat for a couple of years, and I got it going again with less work than these guys suggest, but I wouldn't suggest not following their advice.... better safe than sorry....

FWIW...

Pour gas down the carb.

Or just jump it. it will go. Ideally change the oil and put fresh gas in but it really does not need it.
