Had to remove my Hi-Lift Jack attachment points from the Adventure Rack this week. The corrosion was so bad that the hex-head bolts were frozen into the threads of the attachment. So I broke out the Bad Ass Snap-On Cobalt Drill-Extractor Set. PN# EXDL10. What makes this kit so special is that the drill is fluted for LH operation. #1 Drill about 33% into the depth of the frozen or stripped out fastner. #2 Remove Drill #3 Insert the compatible size extractor into the drill hole and turn counterclockwise with a wrench. If the fastener is a stubborn bitch, then I recommend tapping the top of the extractor with a mallet. The extracter acts simliar to a corkscrew, gripping the sides of the drilled hole and thus removing the fastener. Here is a link to this wonderful product: http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/pro_det.asp?search=true&item_ID=10418&PartNo=exdl 10&group_id=1254&store=snapon-store&tool=all Paul |

Paul, Very cool that you had the right tool for the job. We use extractors in our ski shop quite often. The Snap-on set looks great. I finally decided that I was going to upgrade the single tool I use most often, very boring and basic, but I'd always promised myself a quality set of screwdrivers. Ten years ago, I purchased a very nice set of German made Pozi-drives when I was in Europe (I can see trying to go through security these days with those in my luggage). But my basic screwdrivers were a hodge-podge of ok stuff, Craftsman, Stanley, etc. I bit the bullet and ordered the basic starter set from Snap-on: http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/pro_det.asp?tool=all&item_ID=55793&group_ID=3446& store=snapon-store&dir=catalog And, I've always wanted a good ratchet driver (most I'd seen were crap, and I was quicker with a regular screwdriver), but never bought one, so I bought the Snap-on set, plus some Pozi-drive bits to go along with it: http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/pro_det.asp?tool=all&item_ID=53433&group_ID=13205 &store=snapon-store&dir=catalog If you figure LR dealers charge upwards of $90/hour for labor, it doesn't take long to pay for a quality set of tools!
