Here is a tool storage idea. I just cut up one of those "bucket boss" tool holders and stapled it to the back of the door panel.

Kai,
I hope you have a good dog guard or something blocking all of those missiles from traveling forward when your truck experiences "duress"
I like the organization, but the safety factor is cause for concern.
Just my $.02

While that's an inventive idea, I much prefer Han Chung's set-up:

Protected from the elements, portable, secure, etc.
Just my opinion though... to each his (or her) own!

I can see from the picture that you don't have the jump seats. What do you use the storage compartments for? I use mine for tools. In a nice carry bag.

just fold a nice heavy cloth over the top & front of your tools and secure it nice & tight to keep 'em in place, and also out of sight.

Just say it.

I can't believe there has been this much negative response.

No....this isn't a pelican case. No.....those aren't snap-on tools. Sorry for that. It's a practical idea for an unused space.

The tools aren't going anywhere! You have to force them into the holders. Also, if there is a "situation", the bottom of the bag will swing forward and nothing is going to fly out.

The only way you can see them is if you open the rear door.

There have been a lot cheesier ideas on the discoweb, which have been liked and approved of!

wtf???????

Kai-

Exposed tools like that are still a risky proposition, even though you may have to force them into their holders.

As I'm sure you're well aware, the vertical acceleration the rear end of your truck experiences when you are off-highway far exceed those when you're on road.

If these forces are enough to throw my fully loaded Engel and two loaded 1610s into the air, I'm thinking those tools don't stand a chance in the holders.

If you insist on keeping the tools on the rear door, which is still a safety risk, at least throw a cover over them like Blue suggests and keep thim in the holders. At least that way you can reduce the chance those tools come flying out at an untimely moment.

"There have been a lot cheesier ideas on the discoweb, which have been liked and approved of!"

This is undoubtedly true. However, my response that loose tool bag that is STAPLED to the interior trim is still EEEEEEEEEEEEK!

You posted this for the world to see. Take the criticism for what's it's worth - if the dweb off-road community thinks it's a bad idea....just maybe it is.

"No....this isn't a pelican case. No.....those aren't snap-on tools. Sorry for that. It's a practical idea for an unused space."
So do think if you'd stapled a Snap-on tool roll full of Snap-on tools that everyone would like this set-up better? LOL. I don't give a shit what brand of tools or case is in question, that is not the issue, and no one has mentioned a brand of tool or case but you. The point being maybe this isn't a practical idea for unused space.

I think they look nice, but what do I know.

Is your company still caring for Ken's place?

"here's an appropriate tool to STAPLE to your back door..."

Han, that bottle opener shit is just as nasty as that staped tool baggie. When you screwed that shit onto your cargo door, that was the beginning of the end. I refused to work on your truck after that.

Hey Greg!
Yes, Ken is still one of our customers. Haven't talked to him in a while. Been back to Houston lately?

"Bottle opener vs tool bag"
both functional
both serve a purpose
both mounted in same location

Instead of the tool bag, maybe i should have found a way to mount one of those Multi-tools to the back panel. This would combine both ideas! It would be great. Any takers?

Nope, haven't been back to Houston since I moved. I talk to Ken every so often, but haven't seen him in almost 2 years.

Your rock sliders kick ass. I'm very impressed that you made those. Almost inspires me to buy a welder.

I still don't like the tool bag. It's a clever idea but no matter how hard they are to get in the case I absolutely know they will come out if you hit something (like that idiot who ran the red light in front of me today).

And I think it looks horrible. . . .

Someone awhile back had a photo where they replaced the vinyl panel with diamond plate. If memory serves though, I believe it was the U.S. type instead of the 5x pattern (BTW, what is the official name of that style? Is it "5 Bar"?).

Someone else I believe, made metal brackets that secured a plastic socket set case as well as other items to the rear door and that looked nice in my opinion. I think they had a small spade and a flashlight mounted there.

To make a long story short, I liked it and intend on fabricating something similar over the Winter. Both D1s I have had have had that rear door panel beat to s@#t and replacing it with OEM just to have it happen again would be a waste of money and effort.

I agree that Kai's tool thing appears to be super convenient but extremely dangerous. I had a passenger injured once from a text book in the way-back of my old college Volvo from a very slow collision. My rule of thumb, if it isn't buckled or fastened securely, it doesn't stay in the passenger compartment.
