Does anyone know of any tools that can be used to grab the "stanchion" of the shock to prevent it from rotating when loosening or tightening the bolt?

This tool was mentioned in the suspension install tech article.

Wei - I tried looking for one as well since I had never done it before and I'd like to just pass on advice I received from other, more wiser people on this board. Either use one of those strap wrenches or a pair of vise-grips to hold the shock body (if you are replacing them). If you have a pair of needle vise-grips, you might be lucky enough to get a good grip with those. It worked for me and was a cinch. Just take your time and look at it a bit and I'm sure you'll figure out something that will work without purchasing a "one-time use" tool.

If you have a pipe wrench (cheap at most hardware stores) it will hold the shock body without crushing it. Even if I'm replacing the part, I hate to trash the old one before I know the new part works.

I did the OME suspension on my D1 this weekend and I used a strap wrench to hang onto the shock body. It worked like a charm


However, taking the nut off the front shock tower was a PITA because the shock stanchion(?) would spin inside the body when you go to loosen the nut. I used an air impact wrench to loosen the nylock nuts and made short work of it.

Had the same problem on the install and I had to use the impact wrench as well. Not sure if this is the best way but I had no other recourse.
