What kind of size holes can a decent floor-standing drill handle in steel? My benchtop model maxes out at about 1/2" or 5/8 before it starts vibrating badly, expecially at the end. Are the bigger ones any better than this?

Ideally I'd like to cut 2" holes somehow keeping it relatively neat. Any ideas?

Dean,

I drill 2" + size holes in 3/16 steel and 1/2" holes in 1.5" bar stock on a regular basis using a stand up drill press.

For best results make sure you use the proper speed for the bit/attachment you are using and cool your tool.

Holes ~ 3/4 and above I use a good quality hole saw that is made to cut metal.

Holes below 3/4 I start out with a small bit and work my way up to the larger size.

Here are a few pics of what the holes turn out like……

use a hole saw dean. i reckon your "Floor standing drills" is like a normal drill press?

clamp it down real good like, and go slow. apply just enough pressure. let the teeth of the hole saw do the work. not your arm.

Oh cool, I had no idea there was such a hole saw for steel. Thanks both of you.

Rob, Dave,

Are you using regular bi-metal hole saws from HD?

The ones I have are made by Magna and I get them from a local tool supply shop.

Not sure what HD sells?

You may want to try a tool shop that sells tools for mills, lathes and other cutting equipment since they will be aware of what it take to cut diffrent types of metal.

Okay, How about which brand of press should I buy. I actually want it for wood work, but I'm sure it will get used for metal too. I want to use it primary to make mortis joints and to run it as a shaper. I'd like a normal full size press, but what types have you guys used and which one makes you happy?
