I am looking at buying one of the Discovery II Diagnostic packages from Rovacom, specificaly for the DII. This is alot more than the OBDII codes. It is the exact same as the Dealers test book plus more. Test book has had some issues and still has a reliability problem. Rovacom, who were the brain child and developers behind Auto Logic. Atlantic British are the dealers for AutoLogic in the USA. The people who funded the developers for Rovacom broke away on thee own and started Auto Logic before the bugs were finaly ironed out and still have reliabilty. issues....just ask any land rover garage about there reliability experience with Auto Logic.
Rovacom will connect to any laptop(no nead for the large screen tablet that you see the garages with)It uses a small server to interface with your PC and DII. The server as its called will interface between your PC and DII. This will work with all Land rovers but you have to prchase the licence to access the codes to activate the specific model you want to look at.
I am proposeing on purchasing the equipment and renting it out. I am still figuring out the logistics on how this would be best done. I would probably charge an initial fee for the software so every one could have a copy then charge a rentel fee for the interface and password. I would be intrested in anyone who might be intrested in this...My purpose for doing this is to one have access to this equipment as I'm sure everyone knows the hassle involved with the dealers regarding what they are actually telling you plus the cost, plus help in paying for the return on the investment.

I am intrested in any input anyone might have as well as suggestions.

Thanks

Gordon

If your a member a large rover club it might work. Nation wide from a BB might not.

I seriously doubt the legality of it. Most software licenses does not permit you to distribute copyrighted software, especially not for a fee, even if the software is useless without the interface plug.

Bying the system for yourself, and then operate a business where you perform diagnostic services for a fee is one thing (and permitted by the license I am sure), but what you are proposing I doubt is legal. We certainly would not permit you to advertise this kind of "rental service" on this site, anyway.

I have checked with rovacom and this was there reply. (Check end of message for reply)
I will probably need to re-think the software end but I think it might be do able.

Dear Gordon

Support for the ROVACOM LITE is performed by an owners only technical support forum.

Although you will have a small delay due to the time differential you will have direct access to all or the members of the technical development team of the system. Our owners have found this of great benefit.

In terms of your renting the system out, there is no problem with this under the terms of our license although you will only have one account to access the forums with.

Suggest that you offer some kind of training / instuction on usage of the system and relay any support questions through yourselves.

Regards

Colin Whittall

Well, if it is indeed legal, and if you are planning to ship it all over the place when you rent it out, you better make sure you have good insurance coverage for when the equipment is damaged or not returned. What kind of rental fees were you thinking of charging?

When you figure all the rental, insurance and shipping costs in, it will probably be cheaper to have the dealer read the codes than to rent your equimpment. Like Cutter said, it may work if you are part of a big club, and have local renters, anything else will be a PITA.
