After reading the "Favorite Tool" about how people clean their tools after each use I would like to konw what you guys use to clean your hand tools with. Most of my sockets and wrenches have a coating of motor oil, gear oil or some other assorted grease and would like to clean them up a little. Also, do you guys oil or lube your rachets at all.

Thanks,
Zak

I use a shop towel to wipe the grease and grime off after every job. If your sockets are really bad (because you have been neglecting them .... shame shame!) you might want to get one of those gallon cans of parts degreaser with the little basket and let them soak.

My sockets are not too bad, but when I changed all the fluids on my old Miata I got synthetic gear oil all over them and that stuff stinks. I like the gallon degreaser, might have to run out had pick some of that up. Never heard of PB Blaster, where do they sell that Mike?

Get it at any Auto Zone, Advanced Auto, maybe Napa, probably at most of the regulars.

Zak,

For wiping off the sockets and wrenches, I just use an oily cotton rag. I don't think it really matters what oil you use. I use WD40, Prolong, Militec, whatever is handy. Just spray on a rag and wipe down the tools. It helps a lot if your stuff doesn't have a sandblasted finish.

For lubing the ratchets, I periodically disassemble and lubricate all of our ratchets and ratcheting screwdrivers with grease. They run much smoother when greased. If you have a sealed ratchet, then you don't need to service your ratchet as regularly as you would with an unsealed ratchet. Though our ratchets are sealed, I much prefer grease lubrication to oil lubrication, as the ratchets operate more quietly and smoothly with grease. I service even the sealed ratchets periodically to make sure the grease is not getting hard and preventing full engagement of the pawls and teeth inside the ratcheting mechanism.
