I've got two.

http://www.iequus.com/item.asp?cid=10&pid=3100

http://www.obd-2.com/

The www.iequus.com reader is just a code reader. It will also erase codes.

The www.obd-2.com reader appears to be much more robust and a bit more complicated. It reports on dozens of parameters from O2 sensor readings to vehicle speed. It can purportedly erase codes as well, but I have not tested this yet. the obd-2.com reader plugs into a laptop, so it is not the most portable obd-2 reader out there.

I have the obd-2 reader. It needs to run on a laptop, but it gives you a lot of info. It can also read (and translate into english) some Rover specific codes, and yes, it can clear out error codes also.

I just got one for Christmass. It is called the carchip by Drive right and can be puchased at Sears. It can read codes and reset them also. Seams to work fine. It can also log data and then down load it to your pc. You will need a pc to clear the codes, but it is very easy to use. There are a few versions to choose from.

http://www.davisnet.com/drive/products/carchip_products.asp is the mfg web site

Where did you get the cables to plug into the laptop? I have got the testbook software but can't find a place to buy the cables.

Charles,

If all you need is a standard serial cable or even a null modem cable, you should be able to pick them up at a local computer store, staples, best buy etc. Or you can order them online. there are countless computer parts suppliers on the net. If you need a special connector to connect directly to the OBD port on the truck, you may need to make one or maybe the people at www.obd-2.com can sell you one. here is a pic froom their web site. good luck OBD2 Connector

Tyler

Pre 96 models are based upon OBD1. I have seen a bunch at sears, autozone etc. Go to Autozone and ask them to read you codes with their unit and if it work, buy one just like that one. But does the 94 90 have a read out box underneath the seat like the 95 disco? I am not sure . Try the D-90 page, some one there might know

Your 94 D90 has a built in code display, P/S footwell on the outer edge, you have to remove a trim panel if you have ac.

Thanks. I've had the computer replaced and was just curious about being able to read the codes in the future.

Not exactly. If you want to make your laptop communicate with your cars OBD2 system, you need a special connector. This connector is key, as it has circuitry in it to translate the signals from the OBD2 system into a serial stream your laptop can understand.
And yes, www.obd-2.com will be more than happy to sell you their connector, as the connector is their main product. As a matter of fact, you can download their software for free, since it is useless withouth the connector. When you purchase the connector from them, you also get a serial cable, and a key that tells their software which connector you are using, since there are 3 different OBD2 protocols, US, European and Japanese.

To me it is. If you have to ask that question however, I suspect that you are looking to clear your check engine light for the least amount of money, so the obd-2.com product probably is not for you. The cheapest way to get rid of the light is to remove the bulb, allthough that is not a method I would recommend.

Does anyone know if all Landrovers take the same obd-2 plug? Is there something special in the
obd-2.com cable v. the link to multiplex engineering?

All obd2 vehicles have the same connector. There is however 3 different flavors of OBD2 (for the manufacturer specific codes, I imagine), depending on if the car is a US, European or Japanese model. The TRICOM connector from obd-2.com is able to read all protocols. The obd-2.com connector has a chip in it, so the connector is the actual reader. It then connects to a laptop with a regular serial cable, and you run their software on your laptop. I don't know if their cable will work with other software as well, I imagine that depends on the software you are trying to run. My guess though, is that if you try to run the Land Rover testbook software through a third party connector, it won't work. I would be very surprised if the testbook software don't require some kind of proprietary connector.

Your right Axel, the Testbook software has a proprietary connector, as with the odb-2.com stuff. I also found this www.rovacomlite.com...it's pricy, but I plan on never getting rid of my DII, so it's a worth while investment for me. I really want more than just clearing the generic odb-2 codes...I'll let u know what i find out about the rovacomlite stuff...

cheers

"I would be very surprised if the testbook software don't require some kind of proprietary connector".

That is what I anticipated. A friend of mine said I could borrow a cable to see if it works. I am going to try this first.

Jon, it's called "TestBook"...I just got Rovacom Lite and its expensive, but like I said early, I plan on keeping my DII forever so it's a worthwhile investment...

Mike-

No, the OBD-II code readers will not work with your OBD-I system.

You have an integrated OBD-I code display box under the driver's seat of your Disco.
