Has anyone changed the fluid in their bottle jack?

I drained the fluid thru the release valve. I tried various ways to re-fill the jack - piston fully extended and in the down position. The result was the same. I seem to be getting air into either the resevior, piston chamber or porting. I can't get the fluid to raise the piston.

What am I doing wrong? Is there a way to bleed the system?

Thank-you,

Eric

I'm afraid you'll have to take it to the dealer now. It needs a complete rebuild. Only the special LR fluid can revive it :-) Just hope you don't get a flat while they send it back to Solihull for evaluation.

The oil type is listed on the front of the jack. There is a cap right at the begining of the bell at the top- that is how you refill the jack. At least thats how it is on my 96.

??? I'm all for equipment maintainence but, what did posess you to drain it anyway???

Don't you change your jack oil every 3K miles, like everyone else?

Yup. Every time I have jacked the vehicle up by 3000 miles I have also changed the oil. Trouble is I still haven't figured out where to get chocks and blocks that big. I just figured it would take long enough for the vehicle to hit the ground that I would have time to get out from under it.

Well, my husband decided to drain and/or refill the fluid in my jack and I think it's BROKEN now. He countered my disgust with..."just go down to WalMart and buy another one" ...UGH!

Eric, maybe you two should hang out together!

PS...he refilled it and it won't go up now either.

Sounds like he is less than mecahnically inclined. Once I found that damn pug and refilled the fluid the jack worked perfectly.

So with all errors there is a learning experience. Greased the pistons while I was at it.

What's more amusing than the above comments is the fact that apperently no one else performs regular maintenance on their jacks. It is suggested that the fluid level be checked at regular intervals and topped off as needed. As well as greasing the pistons. The last thing I want to worry about is if my Jack will work when needed. So it is just part of my pre-ride inspection ritual.

Susannah,

I would pay the 150 for a new LR jack in the least or surf on over to Snap-on. There are several reasonable bottle Jacks from Blue point on there site. Personally, I wouldn't want to cheap out on something as critical and useful as a jack.

It's too bad you can't sump your fuel tank, then you'd have yourself a real rover pre-flight inspection. :-)

Dean,
:-) :-) :-) witty today!

Eric, he's quite mechanically inclined, but I really do think he broke it BEFORE he drained the fluid. It's a long story. I do agree about the jacks though...he said he would just buy me a hi-lift instead! :-)

High lifts scare the hell out of me! Saw one break a buddy's arm once and am still gunshy around them. I only recently decided to actually purchase one, as a tool of last resort.

Get the LR jack. They're nice! Just damn expensive. I wouldn't dream of changing a tire on road with a highlift. Though it would look quite impressive though.

With all this enthusiasm about jacking, I figure someone should sanction the first annual Rover Jack Off.

The competition would not only include genuine vs. hi-lift jacking, but also flushing, lubing, and greasing the shafts, and would crown the winner as the finest jack off around.

ps - going to service my jack tomorrow for sure.
